J. Rohwer indicates that this ship was taken as prize by U-34 (Rollman) in the North Sea on Nov. 9-1939. I have no further information on this. She must have been released since she was later in Nortraship's fleet. Below is a picture from the event, received from Erling Skjold, Norway.
The external website that I've linked to at the end of this page has her as scheduled for Convoy OB 88 from Liverpool in Febr.-1940, but she did not sail; she was bound for Freetown at the time. She must have travelled to Freetown later on, because the following month she's listed in Convoy SL 25, which left Freetown on March 22 and arrived Liverpool on Apr. 8. The Norwegian Polartank is also listed. The same site also has her in Convoy HX 49, leaving Halifax on June 9-1940, arriving Liverpool on the 24th, but as will be seen, she's not included on my own page about this convoy; she's not even mentioned in the Advance Sailing Telegram for HX 49, from which the Norwegian Eli Knudsen and Randsfjord were sunk. In Sept.-1940, Snar was one of several Norwegian ships in the Halifax-U.K. Convoy HX 72, in which Simla was sunk. Snar had station 11 of the convoy. A couple of months later she shows up in Convoy OB 245, which left Liverpool on Nov 18-1940 and dispersed a few days later. Her destination is given as Sydney, C.B. Bra-Kar and Teneriffa are also included (again, see the external links provided). Snar returned to the U.K. in Jan.-1941 in the slow Halifax-U.K. Convoy SC 19, bound for West Hartlepool with steel and pit props in station 63. As will be seen by going to the link, several ships from this convoy were sunk (see also Ruth I). That summer she's listed, with a cargo of phosphates for Ipswich, in Convoy SC 34, which left Sydney, C.B. on June 10-1941, then at the end of Aug. we find her in station 104 of the westbound North Atlantic Convoy ON 10, which left Liverpool on Aug. 27-1941. The external site below now has her returning to the U.K. in Convoy SC 45, leaving Sydney, C.B. on Sept. 18-1941, arriving Liverpool on Oct. 4; Snar, however, joined this convoy from Wabana - SC 45 is not available on my own site. In Nov.-1941, we find her in station 23 of the westbound Convoy ON 33, bound for St. John's, returning to the U.K. the following month with Convoy SC 60, bound for Middlesbrough, cargo of iron ore. In March-1942 she can be found, with steel and timber for Cardiff and Southampton, in station 84 of Convoy SC 74, again in the company of a number of other Norwegian ships. That summer, in June-1942, she's listed in the slow Sydney (C.B.)-U.K. Convoy SC 87, cargo of lumber for London, and in Aug. she joined the Newfoundland portion of Convoy SC 96, cargo of iron ore for Newport. Going back to the external site below we find that Snar is included in Convoy HX 212, departing New York on Oct. 18-1942, arriving Liverpool on Nov. 2 - again, she's not mentioned at all on my own page for this convoy. In fact, the same site has her in Convoy SC 108, which left New York on Nov. 1-1942 and arrived Liverpool on the 19th - she could not have been in both. There's now a gap in my voyage information for this ship, but by following the instructions at the external link provided at the end of this page, some of these gaps will be filled. Note that information on her westbound North Atlantic convoy voyages in 1941-1944 will be added - in the meantime, see * below. In May-1943 I have her in Convoy SC 131, which left Halifax on May 18 and arrived Liverpool on the 31st. In Sept. that year she's listed in the Sydney, C.B. section of the slow Convoy SC 141 from Halifax to the U.K., cargo of steel and lumber for London, and in Nov. that year she's listed in Convoy SC 147, again joining from Sydney, C.B., cargo of steel and lumber for Grimsby. Going back to the external site below, we find her voyaging from Oban to Lisbon in Station 45 of Convoy OS 68/KMS 42 in Febr.-1944. The Gibraltar portion, in which Snar sailed (KMS 42*) arrived there on Febr. 25-1944. She returned to the U.K. the following month with Convoy SL 152/MKS 43, voyage from Aguilas to Clyde with iron ore, joining from Gibraltar with the MKS* portion, together with Astrid, Lisbeth, Cetus and Slemmestad. The same website has her in Convoy OS 76/KMS 50* in May-1944, voyage Altbea-Bizerta with coal in station 34, sailing right next to Cetus in station 44. In July-1944 she was scheduled for Convoy SL 163/MKS 54* (in the SL portion from Freetown), but did not sail. Follow the link provided for further dates and more convoy details. In Oct.-1944 she shows up in Convoy SC 158, cargo of lumber for Immingham. This convoy originated in Halifax on Oct. 4, but Snar joined with the Sydney, C.B. portion a few days later. In Jan.-1945, she's listed, with a cargo of flour for London, in Convoy SC 165, departing Halfiax on Jan. 16, arriving Liverpool on the 31st.
Laid up in Haugesjøen from Jan. 21-1958, tied up to Hasseløy. Sold to Brødrene Anda, Stavanger in May-1963, converted to barge and renamed Rans. In use as grain storage, reported broken up in 1976.
