Whale catcher owned by A/S Odd, Sandefjord. Transferred to the control of Royal Netherlands Navy on July 5-1940, then hired by Royal Navy for use as minesweeper in 1942.

POST WAR: Returned in 1946. Sold on Dec. 18-1951 to Cheynes Beach Whaling Co., Albany. Renamed Cheynes.

Pre war: Delivered in Aug.-1920 from Smith's Dock & Co. Ltd., Middlesbrough as Tonjer to D/S A/S Corona (H. M. Wrangell & Co. A/S) Haugesund. "Våre gamle skip" by Leif M. Bjørkelund and E. H. Kongshavn gives tonnages as 3269 gt, 1949 net, 5500 tdwt, 334.2' x 48' x 22.7', Triple exp. 313 nhp (S. D. & Co.). In service to The Far East from 1923. Captain in the period 1922-1939 was Ole Henrik Rasmussen.

WW II voyage information will be added. (In service to places like Singapore, Calcutta, Colombo, Aden, Durban, Mombasa, Penang, Haifa, Lourenco Marques, Karachi, etc. etc.).

POST WAR: Sold on Nov. 5-1951 to Mitsui Line K. K., Kobe, Japan and renamed Mandasan Maru. Broken up early 1961.

Other ships by this name: Haugesund had a small steamship by this name from 1911, originally delivered in 1890 as Victor for a Swedish company (built in Gothenburg), 238 gt. Purchased in 1893 by Lars Riisdahl, D. Gjessen and K. J. Kjeldsen, Skudeneshavn, used for herring trade. Sold in 1900 to B. Stolt-Nielsen, Haugesund, continuing in the same trade. Registered under the Icelandic flag in 1908, but back to the Norwegian flag in 1910 (B. Stolt-Nielsen). Sold in 1911 to Johs. Fresvig, Haugesund and sailed as Tonjer, then in 1916 to Hekla Silde- og Fiskekompagnie (H. Henriksen), Haugesund. Sailed as Material, Christiania from 1918, sank as Erling of Oslo on Dec. 2-1938 while laid up at Hovedøy in Oslofjord. ("Våre gamele skip", Leif. M. Bjørkelund & E. H. Kongshavn). Haugesund also had a passanger/car ferry named Tonjer, built 1953, 332 gt, lengthened in 1955, 341 gt. Rammed by M/S Nordlys in Bergen harbour on July 20-1960, rammed again by M/S Corvus in Stavanger harbour on Dec. 26-1960. Repaired and back in service, taken out of service and laid up in Haugesund in June-1968. Sold to Italy in Dec.-1969, taken over in Jan.-1970 and renamed Espresso Giglio, renamed Giglio Espresso 1971, sunk in shallow water near Napoli in 1999. ("Våre motorskip", same authors as "Våre gamle skip").

Built in Wesermünde 1918. Previous names: Paula until 1920, Dorrit until 1937.

Pre war history: Ordered in 1915 at Schiffbau Ges. Unterweser, Lehe, Wesermünde, Germany (10) as a cargo vessel for J. Lauritzen, Copenhagen, Denmark. Completed as Paula in Oct.-1918 but not delivered to owner at that time. Steel hull, 212.9' x 31.4' x 13.2', 851gt, 493 net, 1400 tdwt, Triple Expansion (Christensen & Meyer, Harburg) 90nhp, 478 ihp. Delivered in 1920 to A/S D/S Vesterhavet (J. Lauritzen), Copenhagen and entered service as cargo vessel Dorrit. Sold in Oct.-1937 to Skibs-A/S Hauges Rederi (Adolph Hauge), Arendal, renamed Tora.

WW II: Tora is listed in Convoy HN 10B from Norway to the U.K. in the middle of Febr.-1940, bound for Dundee with general cargo. Early in March we find her in the U.K.-Norway Convoy ON 17A, and at the end of that month, shortly before the German invasion of Norway, she joined Convoy HN 22, bound for Blyth in ballast - follow links for more info; several Norwegian ships took part in all these convoys.

More voyage information will be added (mostly in service around the U.K.).

POST WAR: Sprang a leak on Nov. 2-1946 and sank 21 n. miles off Almagrunden outside Sandshamn in the Baltic, voyage Kotka-Stavanger with lumber. Crew was saved.

Other ships by this name: This company had previously had another Tora, originally delivered as Greek Aspasia in 1920, 574 gt. Became Lilly Margrethe of Bergen in 1925, Bessegg 1929, then Tora in 1932 for Skibs-A/S Hauges Rederi (A. Hauge), Arendal in 1932. Sold to Latvia in 1937 and renamed Aija, seized by the Germans in 1939, renamed Ingeborg in 1941, lost in 1944. The company also had a ship named Tora later on, see post war information under Kong Bjørn.

Pre war: Delivered in 1918 from Ste. Ame. des Forges & Chiantiers, La Seyne, France as Merlè to French owners, 308 gt, 114 net, 365 tdwt, 133.3' x 24' x 11', compound (Forges & Chiantiers). Purchased by A/S Torbrand (Trygve Matland), Haugesund in 1928, renamed Torbrand.

WW II: Torbrand is is listed in the Norway-U.K. Convoy HN 8 in Jan.-1940. Early in Febr. she shows up in the U.K.-Norway Convoy ON 10.

Lost on Febr. 23-1940 after having run ashore in heavy snow near Skudenes on a voyage from Hirtshals in ballast. No casualties. (All info on this ship, except convoy info, is from "Våre gamle skip").

Pre war: Delivered in July-1889 from Bergens mek. Verksted, Bergen as Tordenskjold to Rasmus F. Olsen, Bergen, 575 gt, 340 net, 730 tdwt, 169.4' x 26.3' x 11', Triple exp. 79 nhp (Bergen mek. Verksted).

WW II: Tordenskjold, in ballast for Sunderland, is listed as sailing in Convoy HN 15 from Norway to the U.K. in Febr.-1940. At the end of March-1940 we find her in Convoy HN 23B, again in ballast for Sunderland. (See also Convoy HN 25). Note, however, that there seems to be some confusion as to the identity of this ship in HN 23B, in that the Advance Sailing Telegram says it was the 575 gt Tordenskjold, while Arnold Hague claims it was the ship above of 921 gt - follow the link provided to my page about that ship.

In Aug.-1943 we find her in Convoy RU 85 from Reykjavik to the U.K., together with Galtesund.

POST WAR: Purchased in 1948 by A/S Tankfart (Erik Lindøe), Haugesund. Sold in 1950 to Ths. Smedsvig & Co. A/S, went to Erik Smedsvig that same year. Delivered in 1952 to O. Bulens, Hoboken, Antwerp for breaking up. At the time she was Norway's oldest ship in foreign trade. (All info on this ship is from "Våre gamle skip", Leif M. Bjørkelund & E. H. Kongshavn).

The book "Damp - Dampskipets æra i Vestfold" mentions a whale catcher by this name, built 1899, no tonnage given. Owned by Th. Laurantson, Tønsberg, then by Durban Whaling Co. from 1913 (Mackeurtan), whose Norwegian representative was Johs. Bruu, Tønsberg. Owned by The Grinrod Whaling Co., Cape Town in 1928. Also, this book lists a D/S Tordenskjold, built 1889, 1186 gt - for Wilh. Wilhelmsen, Tønsberg. Sold to Japan in 1903, renamed Chiyoda Maru 2, aground 1917, but refloated and repaired, sank near Iwate Apr. 11-1920. Another D/S Tordenskjold was built for Wilh. Wilhelmsen in Newcastle in 1903, 3572 gt. Had owners in Stettin from 1922, renamed Hunding, then Katharina Dorothea Fritzen of Emden 1924-1925 - lost near Skudenes on voyage Rotterdam-Narvik in ballast. (Wilh. Wilhelmsen fleet list).

Seized by Pinguin on Jan. 14-1941. Norwegian Victims of Pinguin has more details on what happened on the herding grounds that day. There's also a crew list for Torlyn, as well as more facts about Pinguin.

After capture, Torlyn becme UJ 1112 (ii), later UJ 1218 (ii). (Star XXIII became UJ 1112 (iii) ).

POST WAR: Renamed Finnhval III in 1950, later Lafjord, then Sælodden.

In 1957 the company bought a whaler, which it named Thorlyn (spelt with the h), built 1940, refitted 1951, 710 gt, ex Otori Maru No. 8, Olympic, Conquerer and Tulip, sold Sweden 1964. There's further info on this vessel on my Ship Forum, in the thread starting with this message (Thorlyn is mentioned in a couple of the follow up messages).
