A/S Thor Dahl, Sandefjord
|
247 gt
|
Built in Oslo 1929.
Whale catcher owned by A/S Odd, Sandefjord. Hired by South African Navy in 1941 for use as a minesweeper. Struck a mine and sunk on Jan. 12-1945 off eastern Greece in 39 06N 23 14E, crew of 24, 1 survivor.
The company also had a Treern post war, originally ordered in 1940 by Argentina de Pesca as Capitan Nunes, delivered in Jan.-1941 from Nylands mek. Verksted, Oslo as vorpostenboot Steiermark for the Kriegsmarine. Taken over by the Norwegian State after the war, converted to whale catcher and renamed Capitan Nunes, 383 gt. Sold to A/S Odd (Thor Dahl), Sandefjord in 1947, renamed Treern. Sold to Cia Ballenera del Norte SA, Callao, Peru in 1961 and renamed Don Christobal II. Broken up in 1971. (Sources: Documents about Thor Dahl received from Arvid Sørensen, Norway, and info received from Ulf W. Gustavsen, Norway - there is, however, one conflict in the information of the latter, whose sources state she was renamed Don Christobal when under Peruvian ownerships and was lost during a storm off Punda Negra on March 23-1961. This, however, appears to have been another ship, possibly Thor Dahl's ex. Gaupe, but here again my date of loss is different. See also this message as well as this posting to my Ship Forum).

5781 gt
|
Built at Nakskov, Denmark 1920. Previous name Indien until 1938.
Captain Henry Nicolaysen. Departed Sydney, Australia on June 8-1940 with 8000 tons wheat for New York, via the Panama Canal (crew of 48). Captured by auxiliary cruiser Orion on June 18-1940, about 800 miles east of the Kermadec Islands, 28 48S 160 38W. Norwegian Victims of Orion has more details, including a crew list.
Her voyages prior to capture are listed on this original document received from the National Archives of Norway.
NOTE: I wonder if someone could help clear up/confirm something for me. In the index for the book "Nortraships flåte" by J. R. Hegland it says under Tropic Sea, "See Vindeggen". Under Vindeggen it then refers to a page which describes the capture of Tropic Sea (the name Vindeggen is not mentioned). Was this ship about to be renamed Vindeggen at the time, to replace the one that Chr. Østberg had sold to Germany in 1939?
