A forum message from someone whose great grandfather served on Heimgar during the war, Bjarne Martin Høgenæs. (He died on Dec. 18-1942 at the Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn, New York, and was buried in the Seamens Grounds at the Evergreen Cemetery, Brooklyn on Dec. 21). He had also served on Sydfold among others.

Heimgar also had a Danish seaman named Frede Pedersen on board in 1941 - I can provide contact information for him.

Her voyages are listed on these original images from the Norwegian National Archives:

 Misc. Convoy Voyages:
Only her Trans-Atlantic voyages are mentioned here - for information on voyages made in between those noted below, please see the documents received from the Norwegian archives and A. Hague's Voyage Record above. Follow the convoy links provided for more details on them; several Norwegian ships took part.

As will be seen when going to Page 1 of the documents received from the Norwegian archives, Heimgar was on her way from Mobile to Tampa when Norway was invaded by the Germans on Apr. 9-1940. From Tampa, where she had arrived Apr. 10, she proceeded to Kingston, Jamaica a few days later. Her 1941 voyages also start on this document.

Judging from the listing on Page 2, she spent quite a long time in New York in the summer of 1941. She had arrived there on June 20 and did not leave again until Sept. 25, arriving Sydney, C.B. on the 29th. From there, she joined the slow Convoy SC 47* that same day, and arrived Oban on Oct. 17, cargo of steel and lumber. The Norwegian Berto, Bestik, Danio, Don, Fido, Ingertre, Marit II, Petter II (returned), Spes, Veni and Victo are also listed, and Eglantine is named among the escorts - see SC convoy escorts (though I'm not sure if this corvette was under the Norwegian flag yet at that time). Heimgar later returned across the Atlantic with the westbound North Atlantic Convoy ON 45*, which originated in Liverpool on Dec. 9-1941 and dispersed on the 16th, Heimgar arriving New York on Jan. 2-1942. Veni was again in company (but returned), as were Novasli and Spinanger.

Heimgar now appears to have spent 2 months in New York, before heading to Halifax on March 1 in order to join Convoy SC 73 from there on March 6. She had a cargo of flour and was bound for Glasgow, where she arrived, via Belfast Lough, on Apr. 4. Later that month, we find her in the westbound Convoy ON 90*, together with Aun, Bjørkhaug, Borgholm, Lido, Lisbeth (returned), Nea, Norjerv, Norvarg, Rio Verde, Selbo, Snar, Suderøy, Velox and Ørnefjell. This convoy originated in Liverpool on Apr. 28 and arrived Halifax May 15; Heimgar, however, joined from Clyde and was bound for Three Rivers, where she arrived May 18, later proceeding to Quebec. With a cargo of steel and pulp, she headed back in the other direction again on June 5, having joined Convoy SC 86 from Sydney, C.B. (Ramø served as Vice Commodore Ship). Via Belfast Lough, Heimgar arrived Milford Haven on June 20, Southampton June 25 - again, see Page 2. The following month, she's listed in the westbound Convoy ON 110*, which originated in Liverpool on July 6 and also included Akabahra, Hallfried, Henrik Ibsen and Novasli. Heimgar had sailed from Milford Haven on July 5 and arrived New York (via Belfast Lough) on the 27th.

The rest of her 1942 voyages are shown on Page 3 (which also lists some of her 1943 voyages); convoy information for some of these is available in Hague's Voyage Record. She did not head back to the U.K. again until Nov. 25-1942, joining Convoy SC 111* from New York, however, she put into Halifax on the 29th (as did several of the other ships in this convoy due to the bad weather), later joining Convoy SC 112* from there (convoy originated in New York on Dec. 4 and arrived Liverpool on the 25th). Heimgar had a cargo of sugar and sailed in station 115. The Norwegian Acasta, Aragon (to St. John's, N.F. only), Borgholm, Dageid, Fjordheim, Garnes (also to St. John's), Harpefjell, Norjerv, Primo (to Halifax), Sir James Clark Ross, Solitaire and Tropic Star (returned) are also listed.

Heimgar now remained in Liverpool for quite a long time, before returning to New York in Convoy ON 169 in Febr.-1943, for which the Norwegian Geisha acted as Commodore Vessel. Heimgar arrived New York on March 21, and having made voyages to Nassau, Miami, Key West, Guantanamo, Kingston etc. (again, see Page 3 and Hague's Voyage Record) she went back to the U.K. again on June 16 in Convoy SC 134 from Halifax, cargo of sugar and mail for Liverpool, with arrival there on July 1. The following month, we find her, along with Ferncliff, Fjordheim, Henrik Ibsen, Lago, Ravnefjell and Sommerstad, in the westbound Convoy ONS 16*, which originated in Liverpool on Aug. 19 and arrived Halifax Sept. 1; Heimgar sailed from Milford Haven on Aug. 18 and arrived New York Sept. 4, proceeding to her destination La Guaira the next day, where she arrived, via Guantanamo on Sept. 17 - see Page 4. With a cargo of asphalt and sugar for London, she was scheduled for Convoy SC 145 from Halifax on Oct. 24, but did not sail, and does not show up again until Convoy SC 149 on Dec. 15.

In Febr.-1944, she's listed in the westbound Convoy ONS 29*, which originated in Liverpool on Febr. 12 and arrived Halifax on the 29th; Heimgar started out from Oban on Febr. 13 and arrived New York March 4. Acanthus, Eglantine and Rose are named among the escorts for this convoy (see ONS Convoy Escorts) and Atlantic, Geisha (Commodore Vessel), Iron Baron, Nordanger, Norfalk, Ruth I, Suderøy, Tercero and Vav are also named. With a general cargo for London, Heimgar headed back across the Atlantic on June 2 in Convoy HX 294 from New York. This time, Geisha served as the Vice Commodore's ship, while Abraham Lincoln acted as the Commodore Ship. Having made some voyages around the U.K., Heimgar headed to Quebec, having joined Convoy ON 251*, in which Fjordheim was sunk - follow the link for details. The Norwegian Bernhard, Elg, Evanger, Ferncliff (returned), Germa, Grey County, Henrik Ibsen, Rutenfjell, Snar, Thorhild, Tungsha (Commodore Vessel), Veni and Vera are also listed in this convoy, as is the Panamaian Norbris, which had Norwegian managers and can be found under the N's on this website. ON 251 started out from Liverpool on Sept. 1 and arrived New York Sept. 19; Heimgar sailed from Loch Ewe Sept. 1 and arrived Quebec Sept. 18, according to Page 4.

The following month, she shows up in the slow Convoy SC 158, which originated in Halifax on Oct. 4 but Heimgar joined with the Sydney, C.B. portion, gargo of grain for Ipswich, where she arrived, via Oban, Methil Roads and Harwich, on Oct. 27 - her voyages in this period are shown on Page 5. A couple of weeks later, she joined the westbound Convoy ONS 36*, together with Evanger, Geisha (Commodore vessel), Grey County, Henrik Ibsen, Marie Bakke, Minerva, Snar, Sommerstad, Tropic Star, Velox, Veni and Vinga. This convoy originated in Liverpool on Nov. 13 and arrived Halifax Dec. 3; Heimgar started out from Loch Ewe on the 13th, and her arrival Halifax is given as Dec. 2 on the archive document (though this could simply be a matter of different time zones used in the records). With a cargo of grain for Swansea, she left Halifax again on Dec. 17 in Convoy SC 163, arriving her destination on Jan. 2-1945, remaining there for quite a long time.

She subsequently made some voyages to France (Page 5), before she in Apr.-1945 went back to Halifax in Convoy ONS 48*, which originated in Liverpool on Apr. 21 and arrived Halifax May 4 and also included Chr. Th. Boe, Ima, Toledo (Commodore Vessel) and Vinga. Heimgar had sailed from Belfast Lough on Apr. 21 (having arrived there from Swansea the day before). Her last Trans-Atlantic convoy voyage of the war was made with Convoy SC 177* from Halifax on May 26, which also had Geisha, Germa, Hardanger, Lago, Orwell, Sir James Clark Ross, Slemmestad, Sommerstad, Strix and Velma in its ranks. Heimgar, cargo of lumber, arrived Bristol on June 8. From the U.K., she later went to to Gibraltar and Torrevieja, and already in July, she got to go home to Norway. Another voyage home was made in the spring of 1946 - see Page 6.

* The ON and ONS convoys will be added to individual pages in my Convoys Section in due course; in the meantime, the ships sailing in them (and escorts) are named in the section listing ships in all ON convoys and on the page for ships in all ONS convoys. Also, the entire SC series will be updated and completed, but for now, see ships in all SC convoys.

For more information on the other Norwegian ships named here, please see the alphabet index below, or go to the Master Ship Index.

 POST WAR:

According to this external page, she was owned from June-1947 by Finska Ångfartygs A/B, Helsingfors, Finland as Hesperus. From 1963, Stavros Daifas & Co., Piræus, Greece as Irene. Ran aground on Sept. 9-1969 off Sel'ata, total loss.
