Notes:
Commodore J. Powell, D.S.O. R.N.R. was in Geisha, Vice Commodore was the captain of Manchester Spinner, Rear Commodore the captain of Alresford.

The straggling Baron Kinnaird was sunk by U-621 on March 11-1943, there were no survivors. Jürgen Rohwer's "Axis Submarine Successes of World War Two" states that this U-boat sank "a lone ship steering southwest. The Baron Kinnaird was straggling after 06.03 and reported missing from 07.03".
Jürgen Rowher also lists the American Thomas Hooker as a member of this convoy when she "reported breaking up in a heavy storm on 07.03-43, the crew being taken off by HMS Pimpernell. The drifting wreck was sunk by U-653". As can be seen, this ship is not included in the convoy form for ON 169.

Gothland (requisitioned in Nov.-1941) was on her 7th voyage as rescue vessel. She went to St. John's March 13, after having encountered a survivor on a raft from the American Wade Hampton which had been torpedoed in Convoy HX 227 - then sailed in Convoy JH 42 from St. John's N.F. to Halifax March 15-18 (carrying 64 survivor passengers that had been landed in Newfoundland), and subsequently returned to the UK with SC 125 from Halifax on March 31 to Clyde Apr. 14. ("Convoy Rescue Ships", Arnold Hague).
