CONVOY SC 76
Advance Sailing Telegram & Cruising Order
Departed Halifax on March 24-1942 and arrived Liverpool on Apr. 11
(Arnold Hague's "The Allied Convoy System" says 25 ships).

Advance Sailing Telegram

Transcribed from original documents received from Tony Cooper, England (Advance Sailing Telegram) - His source: Public Records Office, Kew.
Station numbers and names of escorts have been extracted from documents recived from Don Kindell, based on the late Arnold Hague's database - see his listing for SC 76 at
ships in all SC convoys.

Crossed out ships did not sail, underlined returned to port, except those that are linked, which will automatically be underlined.

Note that Mälaren is listed as Sälen in some later convoys on this website.

Additionally, the Rescue Vessel Zamalek (requisitioned March-1940) was with this convoy, sailing in station 54 (52?). She was on her 14th voyage as such, having started out from Clyde with Convoy ON 72 (to Halifax March 20), then returned with SC 76 on March 24 as far as Clyde Apr. 11-1942. ("Convoy Rescue Ships 1940-1945", Arnold Hauge).

Convoy SC 76 Cruising Order
Received from Ted Agar, England - His source: A diary. Stations are pendants flown on departure Halifax, and may have changed as the voyage progressed. It'll be noticed that these are a little different in some cases than those above provided by A. Hague.

As can be seen from the Advance Saling Telegram, more ships were cancelled than indicated in this form.

Hilversum is not mentioned in the diary.

* Note that Baltrover, Teakwood, Polarland and Connector are not included in the Advance Sailing Telegram for SC 76. They may have gone out that day for other reasons, and the author of the diary who saw them leave with the other ships probably assumed that they too were intended for this convoy. Emmy is not mentioned in the AST either (she had returned to port from SC 75, listed in SC 77). According to Polarland's Voyage Record for this period, she did leave Halifax on March 24-1942, arriving Argentia on the 28th. The other ships may also have been bound for Newfoundland.

2 ships have been given the pendant number 14; the Greek Armathia and the Greek Carras.

Notes:
Quest is listed as sailing in Convoy SC 83 which left Halifax on May 7. She had been requisitioned by Den Konglige Norske Marine=Royal Norwegian Navy the previous month, intended for use in Operation "Fritham" at Spitsbergen, Svalbard in May [the re-occupation of Svalbard], but was not used afterall - follow the link to Quest.

The ships left port in the following order (according to the diary):
The first to go out at 11:02 was the Greek Armathia, followed at 11:11 by Yearby (Commodore vessel), and with a few minutes between each ship, Errington Court, Geisha, Prins Maurits, Empire Mouflon, unnamed British freighter, Fort St. James, Stad Arnhem, Birgitte, Keilehaven, Empire Chamois, Mathilda, Far, Mälaren, Christine Marie (airplane crates), Tilemachos, Dimitrios Chandris, Polarland, Mount Parnes, Carras, Zamalek, Greylag, PLM 13 (airplane crates and lumber), Connector (lumber), Baltrover, Empire Wolfe, Spokane, Teakwood, Don, Ivan Topic. (As already mentioned, some of these are not mentioned in the Advance Sailing Telegram, and may not have sailed in SC 76).

The convoy arrived rendezvous on Apr. 5.

A. Hague names the following escorts (extracted from this list of SC convoy escorts, received from D. Kindell; dates are European style, day/month/year):
