CONVOY HX 182

Convoy HX 182 Cruising Order
Departed Halifax on March 27-1942 and arrived Liverpool on Apr. 9 (Arnold Hague's "The Allied Convoy System" says 34 ships).
List received from Ted Agar, England. (His source: A diary. Although the information is usually incomplete, I consider this diary valuable and important in and of itself and, therefore, I've chosen to transcribe it and keep it "as is" on this website, adding further details and/or corrections from other sources separately, rather than within the form itself [except for cargoes], as seen below).

Cargoes have been extracted from a document received from D. Kindell, based on the late Arnold Hague's database - see his listing for HX 182 at Ships in all HX convoys.

Br=British, Norw=Norwegian, Sw=Swedish, Du=Dutch, Am=American, Pa=Panamanian, Ca=Canadian.

Lowlander was also scheduled, but did not sail (also cancelled from the next convoy, but is listed in HX 184).

* There was no ship named Empire Pictou (ref. link at the end of this page to the website about the Empire Ships); according to A. Hague, the ship in station 12 was Empire Pict (which became the Norwegian Norland shortly thereafter), cargo of grain. The ship in station 73 is listed as Ellsworth in the diary, but this was Albert L. Ellsworth (there was a Lincoln Ellsworth, but she had been sunk in Apr.-1941).

** See also HX 174.

* Arabian Prince had returned to port from HX 181. Fort St. James was initially in the slow Convoy SC 76 (departed on March 24-1942), but returned to Halifax.

Comparing the above with A. Hague's listing for HX 182 at Ships in all HX convoys, we find
He has Rapana in station 33, listing her as British.
He has Comanchee in station 44 (instead of 45), saying Davila was detached to St. John's, N.F. on March 30.
Also, he has added the American Sapelo, no station number (not mentioned in the diary).

Notes:
Morgenen sailed in the next convoy, HX 183.

Empire Druid became the Norwegian Norholm in Apr.-1942, and is listed as such in subsequent convoys on this website.

The ships departed Halifax in the following sequence (according to the diary):
The first to leave at 11:00 was the British Delphinula, then 11 minutes later the British Nicoya went out and with a few minutes between each ship the following departed:

At 11:16 Tyndareus, followed by Empire Sapphire (camouflaged), Boston City, F. J. Wolfe, Empire Silver, Norman Prince, Empire Pictou (error - should be Empire Pict), Inverilen, Pan Aruba, Hamlet, Laurits Swenson (with the notation: "Airplane crates, stack has a long curved top with long openings all around it, stack is small"), Lise, Empire Druid, Taron, Herbrand, Ocean Vesper (2 bombers on deck), Belinda, Bic Island, Kaaparen, Vaalaren, Daltonhall (Catapult freighter - notation says: "Minus her Hurricane. The catapult freighters all return again and go out with their Hurricanes"), Davila, Albert L. Ellsworth, Rapana, Fluor Spar, Arabian Prince, British Harmony, Fanad Head (hand on shield on stack), Comanchee, Kaipaki, Fort St. James, Cape Breton. The last ship to go out at 2:00 was the Panamanian Norvinn (Norwegian managers and, therefore, listed under the N's on this website).

A. Hague names the following escorts (extracted from this list of HX convoy escorts, also received from D. Kindell; dates are European style, day/month/year):
Acanthus - From 30/03/42 to 07/04/42
