CONVOY HX 184
Departed Halifax on Apr 8-1942 and arrived Liverpool on the 20th (Arnold Hague's "The Allied Convoy System" says 30 ships). |

List received from Ted Agar, England. (His source: A diary. Although the information is usually incomplete, I consider this diary valuable and important in and of itself and, therefore, I've chosen to transcribe it and keep it "as is" on this website, adding further details and/or corrections from other sources separately, rather than within the form itself [except for cargoes], as seen below).
Cargoes have been extracted from a document received from D. Kindell, based on the late Arnold Hague's database - see his listing for HX 184 at Ships in all HX convoys. Br=British, Norw=Norwegian, Du=Dutch. |

* These ships had been cancelled from the previous convoy, HX 183. * British Statesman had initially been scheduled for the slow Convoy SC 78. Also, a note in connection with Convoy SC 79 states that British Glory, sailing in that convoy, came from HX 184 (had also cancelled from HX 183). Comparing this information with A. Hague's listing for Convoy HX 184 at Ships in all HX convoys, we see that he has also included the British Corner Brook (cargo of steel and newsprint, no station number), and the British Agapenor, general cargo, station 41 - returned to port, listed in HX 185. (Agapenor is also mentioned in the diary, but station number was not known, which is the reason why she's not included in the form above - ref. sequence list further down on this page). **He has not, however, mentioned the British Schuylkill in this convoy; in fact, this ship also appears in the next convoy, so she may have been seen to leave port that day for other reasons than to join HX 184. According to him, British Power (from HX 183), returned to port and later joined HX 185 (from St. John's, N.F.). He has Cape Hawke in station 12, and spells the name slightly differently; Kent has been given station 11, while Lowlander is listed in station 54, and Robert F. Hand in station 81. He lists Athos as British, but this was a Norwegian ship. |
Notes: Athelchief was the former Norwegian Kongsten. The ships left port in the following sequence (according to the diary): Cordelia, Lowlander, Empire Day (Catapult freighter. There's a notation saying "Goes to sea with her Hurricane, LUJ. This is the first catapult that has gone out with her plane for many weeks). At 11:31 the British liner Amerika went out (notation says: "Former Danish, she has a few airmen and women with red gloves and cap and bluff coat with hood). She was followed by Cape Hawk, the British freighter Pandorian, then San Ambrosio, Skaraas, Abraham Lincoln (Norse Admiralty flag), British Resolution, Dorcasia, Rio Novo, Athelchief, Daronia, Athos, British Power, City of Glasgow, British Statesman, Murena, Empire Mica, Pachesham, Ensis, Kaldfonn, San Emiliano, Kent, Southern Empress (Whale Oil Factory. Tanks and airplane crates), Mosli, Salamis, Schuylkill. The last ship to leave at 1:42 was the British tanker Robert F. Hand. A. Hague names the following escorts (extracted from this list of HX convoy escorts, also received from D. Kindell; dates are European style, day/month/year): To the next HX convoy in my list HX 185 |
