D/S Gezina
Updated Sept. 15-2011

To Gezina on the "Ships starting with G" page.

This is a post war picture of this ship, when named Arpeco (see Post War details at the end of this page).
Source: Mogens Rasmussen. It was taken by him in Bornholm early 1957. Mogen says: "Arpeco is obviously having a cargo of wood again after discharging, which can be seen from the stantions at the deck, and of the derricks on the aft-deck beeing tied up to the mast. She is down on the marks, but if she is discharging here or only is in port for repair, is difficult to say. The Island with its location in the middle of the southern Baltic Ocean was before often used as shelter in winterstorms".
Another picture is available at Historical Index of the Great Lakes (external link) - type "Gezina" in the search field for 'vessel', then on the page that comes up, click in the little box with the item number for Lake Erie. It has quite a bit of information on this ship (dimensions and tonnage are a little different from what I've given below). A click in "view image" will bring up a larger photo, looks like it was taken while building.
See also this external page (click in the picture to make it larger).

 Some Convoy Voyages:
For information on voyages made prior to and in between those mentioned here, please see the documents received from the National Archives of Norway and A. Hague's Voyage Record above. Follow the convoy links provided for more details on them; several Norwegian ships took part.

Gezina, bound for London with aluminum bars, is mentioned in connection with the slow Convoy SC 3 from Sydney, C.B. to the U.K. on Sept. 2-1940, from which the Norwegian Lotos was sunk. However, there's a note in one of the documents for this convoy saying that she was "not traced". She's listed as cancelled from the next convoy, SC 4, but eventually got away in Convoy SC 5 on Sept. 18 (her cargo is now given as paper and pulp wood). It looks like she spent about a month at Leith later on, having arrived there from Methil Roads on Nov. 21; departure date is given as Dec. 26 - see Page 1.

In Jan.-1941, she's listed, together with Brask (sunk - follow link for details), Don, Ferncastle, Kongsgaard, Marita, Ravnefjell and Victo, in Convoy OB 272, which originated in Liverpool on Jan. 10 and dispersed on the 14th, Gezina arriving Louisburg on the 27th (she had started out from Oban on Jan. 11). She remained on that side of the Atlantic until March 10, when she joined Convoy SC 25 from Halifax, but returned to port (again, see the archive document mentioned above), subsequently joining Convoy SC 28 on Apr. 9. She was bound for Garston with a cargo of lumber. There's a note in this report for SC 28 saying that her engineer was transferred to the Ocean Escort HMS Chitral for medical treatment on Apr. 10, but was later returned to Gezina. She arrived Garston on May 4, remaining there for several weeks, according to Page 2. With Corvus, Erica, Ingerfire and Sandanger, she subsequently joined Convoy OB 340, which left Liverpool on June 27 and dispersed July 13, Gezina arriving Sydney, C.B. on the 15th, continuing to Quebec 2 days later, arriving July 19. (Direct links to the OB convoys mentioned here have been provided in the Voyage Record above). She appears to have stayed there for quite some time; departure Quebec is given as Sept. 11, with arrival Montreal the next day. She later proceeded to Sydney, C.B., and from there she joined Convoy SC 46* on Sept. 24, arriving Loch Ewe Oct. 10. She had again been in the company of several other Norwegian ships, namely Alaska, Bestik (returned), Bonde, Bruse Jarl, Fidelio, Loke, Senta and Solsten.

Skipping now to Febr. 8-1942, when I have her in Convoy RU 11 from Reykjavik to the U.K., bound for Clyde in ballast (again, see Page 2). On Apr. 10 that same year we find her in Convoy RU 18 from Reykjavik, carrying scrap for Glasgow, where she arrived Apr. 16 - her voyages in this period are shown on Page 3. A few days later, she joined the westbound North Atlantic Convoy ON 88*, which originated in Liverpool on Apr. 21 and also included Akabahra, Brisk, Bruse Jarl, Don, Evviva, Henrik Ibsen, Inger Lise, Marga, Senta, Spurt and Star. Gezina joined from Clyde and arrived Boston on May 8 (A. Hague says this was Boston, C.B., Nova Scotia). Some of these ships, including Gezina, headed back across the Atlantic on May 29 in the slow Sydney (C.B.)-U.K. Convoy SC 85. Gezina had a cargo of lumber for Grimsby, where she arrived, via Loch Ewe and Methil Roads, on June 16. In July, she's listed, along with Albert L. Ellsworth, Bjørkhaug, Borgholm, Bruse Jarl, Evviva, Facto, Fidelio, Hjalmar Wessel, Ingerfem, Lisbeth, Loke, Norjerv, Ragnhild, Selvik and Titanian (returned), in the westbound Convoy ON 112*, which left Liverpool on July 13. Gezina arrived Halifax on July 28, proceeding to Pugwash the next day. The following month, she joined the Sydney, C.B. portion of Convoy SC 96, again with a cargo of lumber for Grimsby, with arrival there on Aug. 30. She later went in the other direction again in Convoy ON 132*, which originated in Liverpool on Sept. 19 and arrived New York Oct. 8. Gezina, however, joined from Loch Ewe and was bound for Halifax, where she arrived Oct. 7. Askeladden, Borgholm, Loke, Pollux (from Halifax), Ravnefjell and Snar are also listed, while Acanthus, Eglantine, Montbretia and Potentilla are named among the escorts - see ON convoy escorts.

Gezina later proceeded to Sydney, C.B., and from there she joined Convoy SC 110* (originated in New York Nov. 17), but put back to St. John's, N.F. on Nov. 25 (see Page 4), and remained there for a long time. Departure St. John's is given as Jan. 10-1943, arrival Belfast Jan. 29. This voyage had been made with the Newfoundland portion of Convoy SC 116*, which had started out in New York on Jan. 4, and again had Acanthus and Eglantine among the escorts (see SC convoy escorts). Both these convoys had several Norwegian ships, namely Fana, Ferncliff, Hallfried, John Bakke, Meline, Norbris (Panamanian flag), Norefjord, Tanafjord and Vav in SC 110, and Bencas (from Halifax to St. John's), Carmelfjell (to St. John's only), Chr. Th. Boe, Fernbank, Herma (New York to St. John's), Orwell and Stigstad in SC 116. Judging from the archive document mentioned above, Gezina later spent a couple of months in Plymouth, where she had arrived on Febr. 4. She did not leave again until Apr. 7, subsequently making voyages to Falmouth, Cardiff and Iceland. The reason for this long stay in Plymouth is not known, but by chance, I came across a mention of Gezina in A. Hague's listing for Convoy ON 163 (external link - convoy left Liverpool Jan. 24-1943), where he says Empire Spey returned to port following a collision with Gezina; perhaps this was the reason for the long gap in her voyages? Please note that Gezina was not herself in this convoy, and the exact date is not given (again, she had earlier arrived Belfast from St. John's on Jan. 29). As will be seen, there's also a long gap in her voyages from June that year; she had arrived Cardiff on June 4 and departure is given as Sept. 8. (It's possible she was being fitted out for Mediterranean voyages?).

According to the external website that I've linked to at the end of this page, Gezina was scheduled for Convoy OS 55/KMS 27 on Sept. 17-1943, but did not sail. A. Hague instead has her, with a cargo of cased petrol for Oran, in Convoy KMS 28*, which started out in Liverpool on Sept. 26 and also included Boreas, Lisbeth, Lynghaug, Norvarg and Spurt. Gezina arrived her destination on Oct. 9. Her subsequent voyages are shown on Page 4 and Page 5, with convoy info for some of them in the Voyage Record above.

J. R. Hegland ("Nortraships flåte") claims she was in the eastbound Convoy KMS 44* which fought off German air attacks between Algiers and Cape Carbon on March 19-1944. Hegland says 4 aircraft were shot down, no ships were damaged. D/S Topdalsfjord was also in this convoy, which departed Gibraltar on March 17 and arrived Port Said on the 27th. Note, however, that A. Hague has not included Gezina in KMS 44 (though does list Topdalsfjord and several other Norwegian ships), and according to her record, she was in Naples on March 19, departing that day for Bizerta. In June that year, A. Hague has her, along with Ingertre, Lago, Mathilda, Meline, Norbryn, Nordnes and Skagerak, in Convoy KMS 52*, voyage Algiers (June 8) to Bizerta (June 10). Again, see Page 5 of the archive documents, as well as Page 6 and Page 7 for information on the rest of her voyages.

* The ON convoys will be added to individual pages in my Convoys section in due course, with more details on each; in the meantime, the ships sailing in them are named in the section for ships in all ON convoys (with escorts). The entire SC series will also be updated and completed, but for now, please go to ships in all SC convoys. See also ships in all KMS convoys, where Gezina is listed in KMS 28 and KMS 52, as mentioned (but not KMS 44); these will also be added to individual pages.

More information on all the Norwegian ships mentioned on this page is available via the alphabet index below, or go to the Master Ship Index.
