 Misc. Convoy Voyages:
For information on voyages made in between those mentioned here, please see the documents received from the National Archives of Norway and A. Hague's record above. Follow the convoy links provided for more details on them. Some include the Commodore's notes and/or various reports and several Norwegian ships took part.

Brisk is listed in the original document for the Norway-U.K. Convoy HN 10 in Febr.-1940, bound for London with general cargo. Early in March, A. Hague has included her in Convoy ON 17A from the U.K. to Norway, and later that month, she's mentioned in connection with Convoy HN 22, general cargo for London. However, it looks like the Advance Sailing Telegram for this convoy also covers ships sailing in Convoy HN 23A, and this is the convoy she actually sailed in (left Norway on March 30). When war broke out in Norway on Apr. 9, she was in London, having arrived there the day before - see Page 1.

Brisk is said to have evacuated refugees from Dunkirk and Boulogne to the U.K. on May 21-1940 (compare with archive document). She also rescued 45 people who had spent 5 days in lifeboats, mostly survivors from Belgian and Dutch naval vessels, and transported them to England, where they were transferred to the hospital ship St. Julian.

In July that year, A. Hague has included her, along with Eva and Grado, in Convoy OA 184, which departed Methil on July 14 and dispersed on the 18th, Brisk arriving Sydney, C.B. independently on July 26. Ref. link provided within the Voyage Record above (another section of the same site also has Cetus in this convoy). She returned to the U.K. in Convoy Convoy HX 64, which originated in Halifax on Aug. 8, but Brisk, bound for Grimsby with a cargo of lumber, joined with the Sydney, C.B. portion on Aug. 10, and arrived her destination on Aug. 27 (Page 1). The following month, we find her in Convoy OA 216, which left Methil on Sept. 18. She was in ballast for Sydney, C.B., where she arrived on Oct. 3. This convoy, which also included Cresco, Don and Eikhaug, had rendezvoused with Convoy OB 216 on Sept. 21, and had been dispersed on Sept. 23 (several ships were sunk, ref. external link at the end of this page). Brisk headed back to the U.K. again with Convoy HX 81, which originated in Halifax on Oct. 16, but Brisk again joined from Sydney, C.B. Please note that she's mentioned several times in a report for this convoy (follow the link). She arrived Oban on Nov. 1 - her voyages in this period are shown on Page 2; convoy info for some of them can be found in the Voyage Record above.

According to A. Hague, she joined Convoy OB 252 at the beginning of Dec.-1940, along with Andrea Brøvig, Elg, Havørn, Malmanger, Profit, Skrim and Solhavn (convoy originated in Liverpool Nov. 30, dispersed Dec. 4), but Brisk only went as far as Milford Haven on that occasion (may have had some sort of a problem?) - it'll be noticed, when going back to the archive document, that these movements are not included. With Egda, Facto, Hallanger, Nesttun and Senta, she later joined Convoy OB 268, which started out in Liverpool on Jan. 1-1941 and dispersed on the 4th, Brisk arriving Demerara independently on Jan. 24. Again, ref. links in the table above.

She was scheduled to return to the U.K. with the slow Halifax-U.K. Convoy SC 23 on Febr. 18-1941, but instead joined the next convoy on Febr. 28, SC 24, cargo of bauxite for Larne, where she arrived on March 21. She now shows up in the U.K.-Gibraltar Convoy OG 58, originating in Liverpool on Apr. 6, arriving Gibraltar on the 21st; Brisk, however, had detached from the convoy on Apr. 14, and arrived Demerara independently on Apr. 28. This convoy, which also included Bruse Jarl, Marga, Marita, Nesttun, Polyana (sunk, follow link for details), Senta, Star and Torfinn Jarl, will be added to my Convoys section in due course, in the meantime, the ships sailing in it are named in this list of ships in all OG convoys.

In June that same year, Brisk is listed, with a cargo of bauxite for Burntisland, in Convoy SC 33 from Sydney, C.B. She arrived Burntisland (via Loch Ewe and Methil Roads) on June 24, and early the following month she joined Convoy OB 341A, which originated in Liverpool on July 2 and arrived Halifax on July 18. Brisk, however, arrived Sydney, C.B. on July 17, having joined from Loch Ewe; again, see Page 2. As can be seen when following the link to this convoy in the Voyage Record above, escorts only are named, while Brisk is listed, together with Evanger, Fana, Leikanger, Novasli, Nueva Granada, Nyholt, Polartank, Ringstad, Sommerstad, Thorøy, Thorshavn, Thorsholm and Vigsnes, in OB 341, which had started out in Liverpool on June 30 and dispersed on July 6. I suspect that some of the ships named in OB 341, in fact, belong in OB 341A, because a total of 82 ships are listed in OB 341, which should have only 35.

Brisk subsequently returned to the U.K. with the slow Convoy SC 40*, departing Sydney, C.B. on Aug. 10-1941. Henrik Ibsen, Ingerfire, Nesttun, Novasli, Selvik, Spurt and Suderholm are also listed. Brisk had a cargo of lumber, sailing in station 13; she stopped at Oban on Aug. 29, later arrived Methil Roads on Sept. 2, and Grimsby on Sept. 6 (see Page 3). The next Trans-Atlantic convoy she appears in is the westbound Convoy ON 21* at the end of that month, but she was only bound for Iceland and arrived Reykjavik on Oct. 5, having detached from the convoy on Oct. 2, according to A. Hague. Other Norwegian ships named in this convoy, which originated in Liverpool on Sept. 28 and dispersed on Oct. 14, are Bello (returned), Hallanger, Kolsdal, Lyra, Nueva Granada (returned) and Taborfjell. Brisk now remained in Iceland for over a month.

The rest of her 1941 voyages and early 1942 voyages are shown on Page 3, with convoy information for some of them in the Voyage Record. See also Page 4.

She did not make another Trans-Atlantic voyage until Apr.-1942, when she joined the westbound Convoy ON 88*, which originated in Liverpool on Apr. 21 and included Akabahra, Bruse Jarl, Don, Evviva, Gezina, Henrik Ibsen, Inger Lise, Marga, Senta, Spurt and Star. Brisk arrived Halifax on May 6, heading back across the Atlantic at the end of that month with the slow Convoy SC 85 from Sydney, C.B., cargo of lumber for Preston, where she arrived June 13. She now joined the westbound Convoy ON 106*, with Lago, Sirehei, Solhavn and Vinga (convoy originated in Liverpool on June 23, arrived Halifax on July 8), and at the end of July we find her in Convoy SC 94 from Sydney, C.B., cargo of flour and barges for Bristol, with arrival there on Aug. 16 - see Page 5 (this convoy lost 11 ships - follow the link for more details). From Bristol, Brisk later proceeded to Swansea, where she spent over a month.

Brisk served as ammunition ship for the Torch operations in Nov.-1942; she's said to have been the first supply ship to arrive Oran, 18 hours after it had been conquered on the 10th. Brisk's captain helped free the Norwegian prisoners at Mecheria at the time and some of them got passage with Brisk (my page Labor Camps has some info on Mecheria). The following month we find her in a convoy referred to by A. Hague as Convoy MKS 3Y. He says she joined from Algiers and arrived Liverpool on Dec. 23 (compare with the details found on Page 5 above). Other Norwegian ships in this portion were Bosphorus (just released from internment in Algiers), G. C. Brøvig and Kong Sverre, while Troubadour and Selvik are listed in what is referred to as MKS 3X (follow the link to MKS 3Y above).

Again, please go back to Page 5 and the Voyage Record for information on some of her subsequent voyages. See also Page 6 (which shows a long stay in Barry in the spring of 1943).

In Apr.-1943, Brisk is listed in Convoy OS 46/KMS 13, voyaging from Milford to Gibraltar with coal, though it does not look like she stopped at Gibraltar, but continued with the KMS portion* to Algiers, where she arrived on Apr. 28. The combined convoy, which also included Belnor, Bollsta and San Andres (Nea did not sail), had left Liverpool on Apr. 15 and split up on Apr. 24, the OS portion proceeding to Freetown (arrived May 3), while the Gibraltar bound ships arrived there on Apr. 26. Brisk later travelled from Algiers to Bone, with arrival May 16 (convoy info in Voyage Record), enduring an air attack on the harbour that same day, but was not damaged. She went back to Algiers later that month (Page 6), and at the beginning of June, she made a voyage from Algiers to Bone with Convoy KMS 15*, arriving Bone on June 5 (Regin, South America and Tautra are also listed in this convoy). She now sailed to Sfax and Tripoli, Libya, and at the end of June, she joined a convoy referred to by A. Hague as Convoy MKS 16A (scroll down to the third table on that page), voyage from Tripoli to Oran, where she arrived July 5.

Brisk took part in the invasion of Sicily and Italy in this time period. In an interview with the captain conducted by Lise Lindbæk after the war (included in the 2nd edition of her book "Tusen norske skip") he mentions, among other things, the following (it'll be noticed that some of this does not quite match up with the info found on Page 6):

On Aug. 1, she was damaged during a German air attack at Palermo, and was put in a critical situation when a bomb exploded on the quay where gasoline and ammunition were stored, with the result that she was surrounded by smoke, flames and exploding bombs. Nearby, a British ammunition ship received a direct hit and was immediately on fire, while parts of the ammunition cargo explodeded. Another bomb hit a warehouse, resulting in large rocks landing on the deck of Brisk. While all this was happening, the gunners frantically tried to get one of the guns to function after the ammunition had jammed, but it exploded, and 1st Mate Erling Andresen (who was also Artillery Officer) was slightly injured, and 1st Gunner Harry (Henry?) Person seriously wounded (he had managed to shoot down one of the German aircraft - his other ships are named on this external page). From 03:50 until 06:00, 1929 rounds had been fired. 2 of the gunners, H. Johnson (see also this external page) and A. Markussen (possibly M. Marcussen? - see this external page) went on board a burning ammunition vessel and got the Oerlikon, which they then placed on Brisk. After the attack was over an American destroyer came alongside and asked "Do you always put up such a terrific barrage?".

Brisk then went to Le Bone (this is the name used in the interview) in Tunisia, where stores were loaded. At Augusta, the Norwegian Marga was also loading stores. This time, Brisk took on board 150 British soldiers. The Major came over and introduced himself as Gundersen; it turned out his father was Norwegian. They were told to be ready to leave on 10 minutes' notice, and to ease the nervousness while waiting for further orders a concert was initiated, with Captain Fossen playing the accordion while the soldiers sang "Sunshine in home waiting for you". While they were singing, orders to proceed to the Italian mainland were received. They went to Reggio (on Sept. 6-1943, D/S Marga was the first cargo ship there, with Brisk coming in as a good number 2, followed by the Belgian Prince de Liege and the British Fort Chambly). Lise Lindbæk goes on to say that the captain and the 1st engineer asked to be allowed to the front itself, about 15 km further north, but it's not clear whether this was Brisk's captain or Marga's. They got so close that they witnessed 18 men being killed nearby. Just a few days later, Montgomery himself came to Reggio, followed by thousands of soldiers.

Page 6 shows a long stay in Algiers in the fall of 1943. According to A. Hague, she later took part in Convoy KMS 29*, voyage Algiers to Malta, where she arrived Oct. 26, proceeding to Syracuse that same day. Atle Jarl, Audun, Brasil and Norelg are also listed.

Going back to the interview with the captain; he says Brisk returned to Bone and loaded a cargo for Bari. Due to minor engine trouble she just barely missed the big explosion there on Dec. 2-1943 (see Bollsta). At the time, she had 300 tons explosives and 38 000 landmines on board, but hadn't quite reached Bari when the air attack took place. She was redirected to Barletta to unload her cargo there (again, see Page 6), and this time it was General Alexander who came for a visit.

She was later sent to the U.K. - see Page 7; convoy info in the table above (she's said to have been the first ship back from the invasions of Africa and Italy), and was subsequently fitted out for the invasion of Normandie (the archive document shows a long stay in Liverpool), but according to the interview with the captain she was not ready in time to take part in the invasion in June-1944 (other sources say she did take part). Page 8 also shows some 1944 voyages, while the rest are listed on Page 9, which also has some 1945 voyages. These continue on Page 10 and Page 11. As can be seen, she got to go home to Norway already in July-1945, making several voyages home before that year was over. Page 12 shows her voyages to Apr.-1946.

* The ON convoys mentioned here will be added to individual pages in my Convoys section; in the meantime, the ships sailing in them are named in the section listing ships in all ON convoys, with escorts. The entire SC series will also be updated and completed (including the already existing convoys), but for now, please see ships in all SC convoys (with escorts). Additionally, all the MKS and KMS convoys will be added, see ships in all MKS convoys and ships in all KMS convoys. Escorts for the MKS convoys can be found here, while the KMS convoy escorts are named on this page.

For more information on all the other Norwegian ships named on this page, please see the alphabet index below, or go to the Master Ship Index.
