CONVOY HN 10 – Norway-U.K.
Sailed from Norway on Febr. 8-1940, arrived Methil on the 11th.

Ships in Convoy HN 10B and HN 11 are also included on this page

After Jan. 1-1940 the assembly at Bergen was always in excess of the permitted number of 32 ships, and due to the heavy congestion at this port, a change of policy had to be considered, resulting in an increase of the permitted number of ships to 40 from Jan. 15-1940, with the escort made up to 5-7 destroyers according to the number available. However, the congestion continued, necessitating the organization of a double convoy; HN 9A and HN 9 B. This arrangement again became necessary in Febr. that year, when a second extra convoy was formed on Febr. 11, namely HN 10B.

HN 10B sailed Febr. 11-1940, arrived Methil on the 13th.
HN 11 sailed Febr. 12, arrived 15th.

Transcribed from several documents received from Tony Cooper, England - His source: Public Records Office, Kew.

Another document listing all the Norway-U.K. Convoys states that Convoy HN 10 had 2 British, 19 Norwegian, 9 Swedish, 2 Finnish, 6 Estonian, and 1 Panamanian ship, for a total of 39, 12 of which were bound for the west coat.

As can be seen below there are a lot more than 39 ships listed in the Advance Sailing Telegram, consisting of 10 pages, all entitled HN 10, but there's a note next to each ship mentioning a convoy designation, so it looks like the ships named in this AST were divided between the 3 convoys, HN 10, HN 10B and HN 11. Unfortunately, the notes are rather difficult to decipher in places, so I'm unable to determine exactly what they say, but I believe the ships listed inside the highlighted rows below belonged to HN 10 (the distribution of the others are noted under remarks, and have been extracted and listed on my pages for HN 10B and HN 11). Please be advised, however, that some guessing has taken place, as the handwriting is very tiny, and in some cases, very blurry. My hope is that this will simply be used as a basis for further research.

I have since received a list of ships from D. Kindell (from Arnold Hague's database), and based on this document I've added a second table further down on this page.

A. Hague also has the British Briarwood in Convoy HN 10 - not mentioned in the Advance Sailing Telegram.

Also, he has included Majorca in HN 11 - this ship is not mentioned in the Advance Sailing Telegram for the 3 convoys.

For info, Norway also had a Gallia (larger than the Swedish one), as well as a ship named Agnes, Oscar, and Gunny.

As mentioned, a document listing all the Norway-U.K. Convoys states that there were 2 British, 19 Norwegian, 9 Swedish, 2 Finnish, 6 Estonian, and 1 Panamanian ship in HN 10.

Notes:
Note that all the Norwegian ships mentioned in this convoy are discussed on this website (some in the Homefleet section) - they can be reached through the Master Index page.

According to HMS Delight's report for HN 10, 38 ships (as opposed to 39 given elsewhere) left Norway at 12:30 on Febr. 8 with HMS Delight, Imogen, Ilex and Imperial. 12 ships were bound via Cape Wrath, 1 for Aberdeen and the rest for Methil.

Due to rough weather on the night of Febr. 8/9, a third of the rear half of the convoy became detached and were about 5 miles on the port quarter of the main body at daylight on the 9th. By turning the main body 90° to port together, the 2 portions met up again at noon and the convoy was reformed by 13:00.

HMS Kimberley had joined in the meantime, and at 15:00 the 12 westbound ships were detached under her escort to pass through the Fair Island channel, as it was felt that routing them north of the Shetlands would have entailed a considerable detour.

The remainder of the convoy arrived Methil anchorage at 10:15 on Febr. 11, having detached the ship bound for Aberdeen at midnight the night before (probably the Norwegian Edda).

Escorts mentioned:
HMS Delight (S.O.), Edinburgh, Arethusa, Kimberley, Ilex, Imogen, Imperial, Nubian (see this page listing escorts for the HN and ON convoys).

Also, see the text under Febr. 8 on this external page, which mentions this convoy and its escorts (scroll down in the text).
