* Note that Havmøy and Drakepool (from SC 79) are not mentioned in the Advance Sailing Telegram above, and I don't believe they were actually scheduled for SC 80 (again, please remember that the information in this table is based on a diary). When checking Havmøy's voyages for this period on this document received from the National Archives of Norway, we learn that she was in Halifax at this time, but she was not bound for the U.K. (in fact, she never made any voyages to the U.K. at all during the war, as will be seen when going to my page about this ship). However, she left Halifax the following day for St. John's, N.F., and according to Arnold Hague, this voyage was made with Convoy LC 7 (external link). Drakepool, on the other hand, later joined Convoy SC 81. |
Notes: Commodore was in Port Nicholson, Vice Commodore in Empire Redshank, Rear Commodore in Widestone. Clyde Commodore: In Cotati. The ships left port in the following order (according to the diary - as mentioned, some later returned to port): Shortly after Anna had gone out at 12:19 there's a note for 12:20 saying: "Prins Willem III, Dutch freighter, comes in, signalling that she was sinking and needed immediate assistance. There was considerable excitement and a proposal to stop the convoy but this was not done and the Prins Willem III was taken into the Furness Withy Wharf where the water is shallow so that if she sank she would settle on a soft bottom." (This ship is listed as leaving in Convoy HX 187 on Apr. 26-1942). Convoy arrived rendezvous on Apr. 28. A. Hague names the following escorts (extracted from this list of SC convoy escorts, received from D. Kindell; dates are European style, day/month/year): Related external link: To the next SC convoy in my list SC 81 |
