CONVOY HX 331
Departed New York City on Jan. 8-1945 and arrived Liverpool on the 22nd.
Arnold Hague's "The Allied Convoy System" gives 62 ships in this convoy.
Transcribed from several documents received from Tony Cooper (Advance Sailing Telegram) - His source: Public Records Office, Kew. The station numbers and cargoes for the tankers have been extracted from a document received from D. Kindell, based on the late Arnold Hague's database - see his listing for Convoy HX 331 at Ships in all HX convoys. (It'll be noticed, when comparing A. Hague's listing with what can be found below, that some of the ships listed as sailing in the Halifax portion in the Advane Sailing Telegram are not listed in this portion by A. Hague).
Info re. Russian convoys has been added with the help of "Convoys to Russia", Arnold Hague and Bob Ruegg. |

Notes: Henry B. Plant, on a voyage from New York for Antwerp (via Liverpool) with 9300 tons of engineers supplies, did not make it to her destination. She was sunk on Febr. 5-1945 by U-245. On board were a crew of 40, 23 armed guard, 1 pilot and 1 U.S. Army officer - 9 crew and 3 armed guard died (Axis Submarine Successes of World War Two", Jürgen Rohwer and "Lloyd's War Losses", Vol I). See also the external link provided below. The Rescue Vessel Perth was on her 28th voyage as such, having started this voyage from Clyde with the westbound Convoy ON 273 on Dec. 19-1944, to Halifax Jan. 2-1945 - returning to Clyde with Convoy HX 331, Jan. 10-Jan. 22-1945. Her previous eastbound voyage had been with Convoy SC 161. ("Convoy Rescue Ships 1940-1945", Arnold Hague). A. Hague names the following escorts (extracted from this list of HX convoy escorts received from D. Kindell; dates are European style, day/month/year): Related external links: Eastbound convoys 1944 & 1945 - This page shows all the other eastbound convoys sailing in 1944 and 1945 in chronological order. Liberty Ships - All the ships listed as American in the table above were Liberty ships. Unfortunately, the list no longer appears to be included at this site (unfortunate, because I have 100's of links to it from my website). If I remember correctly, that particular section was hosted by Peter Thompson, who has now moved to a different site, but I cannot find his list of Liberty Ships. I'll leave the link up for now until I can find out whether it's still available somewhere. I did find an identical page here, but as will be seen, the alphabetical links receive an error. List of Liberty Ships by Hull No. - Includes info on the men for whom the ships were named (from Wikipedia). The Empire Ships website has a section listing the "Sam"-ships, and other Liberty ships.
