CONVOY HX 191
Departed Halifax on May 24-1942 and arrived Liverpool on June 6 (Arnold Hague's "The Allied Convoy System" gives 24 ships). |

List received from Ted Agar. (His source: A diary. Although the information is usually incomplete, I consider this diary valuable and important in and of itself and, therefore, I've chosen to transcribe it and keep it "as is" on this website, adding further details and/or corrections from other sources separately, rather than within the form itself [except for cargoes], as seen below).
Cargoes have been extracted from a document received from D. Kindell, based on the late Arnold Hague's database - see his listing for HX 191 at Ships in all HX convoys. Br=British, Am=American, Norw=Norwegian, Bel=Belgian, Sw=Swedish, Gr=Greek. |

Melmore Head, Empire Dunstan and Margarita Chandris had been cancelled from the slow Convoy SC 84. Margarita Chandris is listed as sailing in SC 85. Also, a note for SC 85 states that Empire Union and Boston City, sailing in that convoy, originally came from HX 191. Doña Aurora had been cancelled from the previous convoy, HX 190. Some of the ships have been given the same station number in the diary, hence my question marks. However, when comparing the above with A. Hague's listing for HX 191 at Ships in all HX convoys, we see that he has Cairnvalona in station 12, Lynghaug in station 13, Hjelmaren in station 53 and Ocean Faith in station 52. The Greek Aegeus has been given station 82. |
The ships left in the following sequence (according to the diary): The first to leave at 11:00 was Tactician, followed at 11:19 by Corrales, then with a few minutes between each ship, Torr Head, Cairnvalona, Sovac, Melmore Head, Taron, Elisabeth van Belgie, Doña Aurora, Manchester Port, Dorelian, Empire Nightingale, Aegeus, Empire Dunstan, James Lykes, Zamalek, Ocean Faith, Jean Jadot, Santa Elisa, Ocean Honour, Meigle, Forth Amherst, Lynghaug, Consuelo, Hjelmaren, Empire Flamingo, Empire Stanley, NewYork City. Zamalek (requisitioned in March-1940) was on her 15th voyage as Rescue Vessel, having started this voyage at Clyde on Apr. 28 with Convoy ON 90 (to Halifax May 15), then returned with HX 191 on May 24, to Clyde June 6. ("Convoy Rescue Ships 1940-1945", Arnold Hague). A. Hague names the following escorts (extracted from this list of HX convoy escorts, also received from D. Kindell; dates are European style, day/month/year): To the next HX convoy in my list HX 192 |
