Grainton came from the slow Convoy SC 85.
Empire Flamingo had returned to port from the previous convoy, HX 191. When comparing the above with A. Hague's listing for HX 192 at Ships in all HX convoys, we see that he has Barrwhin in station 32, adding that she became a straggler on June 3 and returned to port (St. John's). She shows up again in Convoy SC 86, joining from Newfoundland. The Panamanin Lookout is not included in A. Hague's list. Checking further, I find that he has listed her in Convoy BX 21, which arrived Halifax from Boston on May 31-1942 (external link; It'll be noticed that several of the other ships in Convoy HX 192 are also listed in this convoy), and this could be the reason she's named in the diary; she must have been seen in port that day by the author of the diary. Having said that, it's possible she did join HX 192, because she must have headed to the U.K. around this time - she's included in Convoy OS 35 from Liverpool on July 21 (also external link). |
The ships left Halifax in the following order (according to the diary): The first to leave at 14:17 was the Commodore Vessel Manchester Exporter, followed at 14:20 by Argos Hill (U.S. Army Trucks on deck), then with a few minutes between each ship, Audacious, Samuel Bakke (U.S. trucks on deck), Empire Ray (Catapult freighter, NJS on Hurricane), Fanad Head, Barrwhin (crates on deck), Sembilangan (U.S. trucks on deck), Grainton, Blankaholm, Empire Flamingo, Mount Kyllene, Dromore (4 speed boats and trucks), Fernmoor (lumber), Athelregent, Heranger (2 bombers on deck), Lookout, Vaalaren, Ganymedes, Norsol, Ettrickbank, Rio Novo, Almeria Lykes (KOTJ), J. E. Kinney, North King, Empire Marvell, Sophocles, Arabian Prince, and the last to go out at 15:44 was Empire Coral. A. Hague names the following escorts (extracted from this list of HX convoy escorts, also received from D. Kindell; dates are European style, day/month/year): To the next HX convoy in my list HX 193 |
