CONVOY HX 193

Convoy HX 193 Cruising Order
Departed Halifax on June 7-1942 and arrived Liverpool on the 19th (Arnold Hague's "The Allied Convoy System" gives 31 ships).
List received from Ted Agar. (His source: A diary, which lists ships from Halifax only. 2 more joined from Newfoundland. Although the information is usually incomplete, I consider this diary valuable and important in and of itself and, therefore, I've chosen to transcribe it and keep it "as is" on this website, adding further details and/or corrections from other sources separately, rather than within the form itself [except for cargoes], as seen below).

Cargoes have been extracted from a document received from D. Kindell, based on the late Arnold Hague's database - see his listing for HX 193 at Ships in all HX convoys.

The stations given here are at time of departure, and may have changed as the voyage progressed.

Br=British, Du=Dutch, Norw=Norwegian, Am=American.

*The diary also mentions the Dutch Phrontis, but no station number is provided. According to A. Hague, she had station 22, cargo of wheat.

Additionally, an original document (from Public Records Office, Kew) received from Tony Cooper, England shows the following as joining from Newfoundland (sailed June 9):
Manchester Division - general cargo for Holyhead and Manchester.
Pachesham - steel and newsprint for Manchester.

Judging from the information in the diary, the convoy had 4 rows upon departure Halifax. However, when going to A. Hague's listing for HX 193 at Ships in all HX convoys, we see that he has a ship in station 35, namely the British Manchester Division mentioned above.

A. Hague says that Ocean Vintage became a straggler on June 17, and that Fort Townshend was detached to St. John's, N. F., but no date is given. Pachesham (joining from Newfoundland, as mentioned) subsequently took her station 34. Teakwood and Tudor Prince were also detached to St. John's.

City of Dieppe returned - she's listed in the next convoy, HX 194, as is the cancelled Torvanger (sunk, follow link to Torvanger above for details - she had previously arrived Halifax on June 4 with survivors from the British Mattawin).

The ships in station 32 is errouneously listed as Errita in the diary. Erria was originally a Danish ship, taken over by MoWT in 1940.

Note:
Empire Masefield became the Belgian Belgian Seaman, and is listed as such in later convoys on this website (more information on this ship is available at the Empire Ships website that I've linked to at the end of this page).

The ships went out in the following order (according to the diary):
The first to leave at 10:17 was Melampus, followed at 10:41 by Fort Abitibi, then with a few minutes between each ship, City of Dieppe, Eastern City (Catapult freighter, LUV on Hurricane), Manchester Merchant, Clan Ferguson, Errita (should be Erria), Fort George, Empire Confidence, British Progress, Vav, Polartank, Empire Chivalry, Bayano, Magdala, Thurland Castle, Montevideo, Kafiristan (Catapult freighter), Skiensfjord, Empire Masefield, Tudor Prince, Ocean Vintage, Somerville, Tucurinca, Laurits Swenson, Katy, Ocean Vigour, Tulsa, Stuart Prince, Tjitjalengka, Ocean Vanity, Teakwood, Phrontis (PGSU), and the last to go out at 13:27 was Lavington Court.

A. Hague names the following escorts (extracted from this list of HX convoy escorts, also received from D. Kindell; dates are European style, day/month/year):
Anchusa - From 10/06/42 to 18/06/42
