* Note that there was also a convoy with this designation the previous year, and Askeladden is included in it on this external page, but I believe this must be an error, beause she sailed in MKS 40 at that time - see the entry for Febr. 14 under 1944 above. Note also that there were 2 convoys with the designation HA 28, one in March-1944, in which Askeladden is listed, and one in Apr.-1945, mentioned in the next entry below, in which Askeladden is not mentioned at all. Again, this might be a mix up; as will be seen under March-1944, there's no mention of the first HA 28 voyage, and I believe she belongs in the 1945 HA 28 convoy instead.

For information on voyages made in between those mentioned here, please see the documents received from the National Archives of Norway and A. Hague's Voyage Record above. Follow the convoy links provided for further details; several Norwegian ships took part.
Askeladden (having been cancelled from Convoy HX 46) sailed in the Halifax-U.K. Convoy HX 47 in June-1940, in which Italia and others were sunk - follow the links for details. Askeladden was bound for Sunderland, cargo of pit props, station 73. According to her Voyage Record she stopped at Portland for degaussing before proceeding to Sunderland at the beginning of July (see also Page 1). Later that month she joined Convoy OA 182, which left Methil on July 10 and dispersed on the 14th, Askeladden arriving Nelson, N.B. on July 27 - see the external link provided within the Voyage Record. With lumber for London, she was scheduled to return to the U.K. in the Sydney (C.B.) portion of Convoy HX 66 (Norne was sunk, follow the link for info), but instead joined the first, slow Sydney (C.B.)-U.K. Convoy SC 1, which left on Aug. 15, and in which Eva was sunk. Askeladden arrived Clyde on Aug. 30 and subsequently remained in the U.K. for quite a long time.
She was scheduled for Convoy OB 221 (ref. external link at the end of this page), which left Liverpool on Sept. 29, but she did not sail. Her destination is given as Panama. She's later listed in the U.K.-Gibraltar Convoy OG 44*, originating in Liverpool on Oct. 11, arriving Gibraltar on the 24th - Askeladden, however, was bound for Lisbon, where she arrived on the 23rd and again had a long stay in port (Page 1). The following month, she's listed as bound for Tyne with a cargo of pit props in Convoy HG 47 from Gibraltar to the U.K. Via Oban and Methil Roads, she arrived Tyne on Dec. 11 and it'll be noticed, when going back to the archive document, that she remained there for a long time - departure is given as March 11-1941. Another long stay there is shown on Page 2.
In the summer of 1941 she made a voyage to Reykjavik. She's not listed, but A. Hague suggests she may have sailed in Convoy OB 345 for this voyage (link in the table above). From Reykjavik, she later joined the westbound North Atlantic Convoy ON 1, originating in Liverpool on July 26-1941. Askeladden arrived Yarmouth, N.S. on Aug. 13, the convoy having been dispersed Aug. 9. With a cargo of pulpwood, she returned at the end of that month with Convoy SC 42 from Sydney, C.B., which lost several ships (including Stargard). Follow the links for more info. In Oct.-1941 she's listed as bound for Sydney, C.B. in Convoy ON 27*, which originated in Liverpool on Oct. 16 and dispersed Nov. 2, Askeladden arriving her destination the next day. Fanefjeld, Harpefjell, Heina, Inger Elisabeth, Rolf Jarl and Torfinn Jarl are also named in this convoy. Askeladden was scheduled to head back to the U.K. in Convoy SC 55 on Nov. 16 (she was in Port Arthur on that date - see Page 2), but instead joined the next convoy on Nov. 22, SC 56, cargo of aluminium and pulp for Glasgow, with arrival Dec. 9.
At the beginning of 1942 she appears in the U.K.-Gibraltar Convoy OG 78*, which left Milford Haven on Jan. 9 and arrived Gibraltar on the 24th - Askeladden arrived Huelva that day, having sailed from Clyde Jan. 11. At the beginning of the following month, she's listed in the Gibraltar-U.K. Convoy HG 78, bound for Hull with iron pyrites, arriving there (via Oban and Methil Roads) on Febr. 21, remaining for 3 weeks - see Page 2 and Page 3. She later joined the westbound North Atlantic Convoy ON 78*, which originated in Liverpool on March 21 and arrived Halifax on Apr. 9; Askeladden is said to have arrived New York City on that date, having started out from Loch Ewe on March 21. (Fjordheim, Iron Baron and Solitaire are also listed). Following a 3 weeks say in New York, she proceeded to Halifax in order to join Convoy SC 83 back to the U.K. on May 7. She had a cargo of timber for Swansea and Southampton and sailed in station 113 of the convoy, for which Acanthus, Eglantine, Potentilla and Rose served as escorts for a while. Askeladden arrived Swansea on May 27, Southampton on June 1.
We now find her listed as bound for St. John, N.B. in the westbound Convoy ON 104*. The Norwegian Bonde, Ruth I and Veni are also listed in this convoy, which originated in Liverpool on June 16. Askeladden arrived Halifax on July 1, proceeding to St. John, N.B. on July 5, with arrival July 7 and again had quite a long stay in port (Page 3). Early the following month, she joined Convoy SC 95, cargo of lumber for Immingham, where she arrived (via various other ports) on Aug. 23, returning with Convoy ON 132*, which originated in Liverpool on Sept. 19 and arrived New York on Oct. 8; Askeladden, however, was bound for Halifax on that occasion, and arrived there on Oct. 7, but she later joined Convoy ON 134* from there to New York on Oct. 13 (this convoy had sailed from Liverpool on Sept. 26 and arrived New York on Oct. 17). Both these convoys had several other Norwegian ships, namely Borgholm, Gezina, Loke, Pollux (from Halifax), Ravnefjell and Snar in ON 132; Acanthus, Eglantine and Potentilla are again named among the escorts, as is Montbretia (see ON convoy escorts), and Bonneville (Commodore Vessel), Glarona, Grado, Granfoss, Hallfried, Hjalmar Wessel, Loke, Mathilda, Maud, Sir James Clark Ross and Veni in ON 134 (some joining from Halifax). The Panamanian Nortun, which had Norwegian managers and is, therefore, listed under the N's on this website, also took part in the latter. Askeladden's voyages in this period are shown on Page 4.
From New York, she later made a voyage to Curacao (convoy info in Voyage Record above), then made several voyages to Trinidad, Paramaribo and Demerara. She did not head back to the U.K. again until Sept. 3-1943, when I have her in station 115 of Convoy SC 141 from Halifax, bound for Garston with a cargo of lumber, where she arrived on Sept. 17, according to Page 5. She subsequently had a long stay in Liverpool, before heading to Algiers, joining Convoy OS 57/KMS 31, which departed Liverpool on Oct. 27. Askeladden was in the KMS portion*, which arrived Gibraltar on Nov. 10, the convoy having split up the day before. See the link provided in the Voyage Record for more details on the combined convoy; several Norwegian ships are named. Askeladden arrived her destination on Nov. 13. That Christmas she lost a crew member when 1st Engineer Sverre Andersen drowned at Catania on Dec. 24. He had previously served on D/S Ringulv with my father - see the crew list for Ringulv. Askeladden's subsequent voyages are shown on the archive document, with convoy info for some of them in the table above.
In Febr.-1944 she made a voyage from Augusta to Philippeville in Convoy MKS 40* (originated in Port Said on Febr. 9, arrived Gibraltar on the 21st). She returned to Augusta in Convoy KMS 42* (originated in Gibraltar on Febr. 25). At the end of Apr.-1944 she made a voyage from Algiers to Augusta in Convoy KMS 48*, and at the end of May she's listed as bound from Oran to Bone in Convoy KMS 51* (convoy originated in Gibraltar May 28). Again, see Page 5 and the Voyage Record above for info on voyages made in between those mentioned here. Her subsequent voyages are listed on Page 6.
I also have a snippet of information saying that Askeladden was in Augusta in Aug.-1944, departing for Tripoli on Aug. 8. This fits in with details found in her Voyage Record, saying she made this voyage independently, arriving Tripoli on Aug. 10. Later that month she appears in Convoy MKS 60*, which left Port Said on Aug. 27 and arrived Gibraltar Sept. 7. However, it looks like Askeladden went to Alexandria on that occasion, arriving Aug. 28, having become a straggler from the convoy, according to A. Hague.
For information on the rest of her voyages, please go back to Page 6 and the Voyage Record - See also Page 7, which shows that she went home to Norway in Jan.-1946 (as can be seen, she occasionally had long stays in port).
* The ON convoys will be added to individual pages in my Convoys section in due course, with further details on each, but in the meantime, the ships sailing in them (and escorts) are named in the section listing ships in all ON convoys. The MKS, KMS and OG convoys will also be added; for now, see ships in all MKS convoys, ships in all KMS convoys, and ships in all OG convoys.
More information on all the other Norwegian ships mentioned here can be found via the alphabet index at the end of this page, or go to the Master Ship Index.
Sold in 1950, renamed Leonardia. Sold in 1954 to Partenreederei Calliope (manager Hans Kruger GmbH, Hamburg), renamed Calliope. Later owned by Dr Martin Schlusser, Germany when laid up at Hamburg. Sold in Aug.-1961 to Eisen & Metall AG, Hamburg for breaking up. Note that the post war history on this external page is a little different.
