CONVOY HX 338
Departed New York City on Febr. 12-1945 and arrived Liverpool on the 27th.
Arnold Hague's "The Allied Convoy System" gives 70 ships in this convoy.
Transcribed from several documents received from Tony Cooper (Advance Sailing Telegram) - His source: Public Records Office, Kew.
The station numbers and cargoes for the tankers have been extracted from a document received from D. Kindell, based on the late Arnold Hague's database - see his listing for Convoy HX 338 at Ships in all HX convoys. See also westbound Convoy ON 277, ON 278 and ON 279 |

* There's an Ezra Meech (delivered Jan. 27-1945) listed in the Advance Sailing Telegram for the next convoy, HX 339. There was also a Liberty Ship named Ezra Meeker (built in 1942), which is how this name is spelt in the AST for HX 338, but I don't know whether there's a mix up of names here, or whether the latter was indeed scheduled for this convoy. According to A. Hague, Ezra Meeker arrived the US from Oran on Febr. 14-1945 in Convoy GUS 68, leaving again on March 9 with Convoy UGS 79 (both links are external). | |||||

Notes: Commodore's notes are not available. The Rescue Vessel Dundee was on her 11th voyage as such, having started this voyage from Clyde with the westbound Convoy ON 279 on Jan. 18-1945, to Halifax Febr. 2 - returning with Convoy HX 338 from Halifax on Febr. 14, to Clyde Febr. 27. ("Convoy Rescue Ships 1940-1945", Arnold Hague). A. Hague names the following escorts (extracted from this list of HX convoy escorts received from D. Kindell; dates are European style, day/month/year): Related external links: Liberty Ships - This website has been used to check the spelling of all the Liberty ships listed in this convoy (convoy docs don't always have the correct spelling, or they may be difficult to decipher). A few of them had just been delivered in Jan.-1945. Unfortunately, the list no longer appears to be included at this site (unfortunate, because I have 100's of links to it from my website). If I remember correctly, that particular section was hosted by Peter Thompson, who has now moved to a different site, but I cannot find his list of Liberty Ships. I'll leave the link up for now until I can find out whether it's still available somewhere. I did find an identical page here, but as will be seen, the alphabetical links receive an error. See also: RA Convoys - Here is A. Hague's listing for RA 66. Also available via Russian Convoys. To the next HX convoy in my list HX 339 |
