CONVOY HX 337
Departed New York City on Febr. 7-1945 and arrived Liverpool on the 21st.
Arnold Hague's "The Allied Convoy System" gives 68 ships in this convoy.

Transcribed from several documents received from Tony Cooper (Advance Sailing Telegram) - His source: Public Records Office, Kew.
Details re. Arctic convoys were found in "Convoys to Russia 1941-1945" by Bob Ruegg and Arnold Hague.

Crossed out ships did not sail.

The station numbers and cargoes for the tankers have been extracted from a document received from D. Kindell, based on the late Arnold Hague's database - see his listing for Convoy HX 337 at Ships in all HX convoys.

For info, some of the ships in this convoy had previously arrived with the westbound Convoy ON 277; see also ON 278.

This ship is not mentioned in the original Advance Sailing Telegram. See also Convoy SG 60 (external link).

Also, the Rescue Vessel Bury (station 49) - see Notes below.

A. Hague has Empire MacKay in the main portion.

Notes:
Commodore, Captain B. W. L. Nicholson, R.N. was in the Norwegian Laurits Swenson. According to A. Hague, Vice Commodore was the captain of Fordsdale.

Commodore's notes are not available.

The Rescue Vessel Bury was on her 20th voyage as such, having started this voyage from Clyde with the westbound Convoy ONS 40 on Jan. 12-1945, to Halifax Jan. 30 - returning to Clyde with Convoy HX 337, Febr. 9-Febr. 21. Towards the end of this voyage she was instrumental in rescuing 36 of the crew of one of the escorts, HMS Vervain, which was sunk on Febr. 20 by U-1276 (I've also seen this sinking credited to U-1208, which was sunk with all hands on Febr. 24 - see also the external website that I've linked to below, which says there were 34 survivors from Vervain). Bury's previous voyage had been with Convoys ON 267 / HX 325. ("Convoy Rescue Ships 1940-1945", Arnold Hague).

A. Hague names the following escorts (extracted from this list of HX convoy escorts received from D. Kindell; dates are European style, day/month/year):

The attack on HMS Vervain - As will be seen the U-boat (U-1276) was sunk that same day by one of the other escorts of HX 337, HMS Amethyst. The site also has information on U-1208.

Eastbound convoys 1944 & 1945 - This page shows all the other eastbound convoys sailing in 1944 and 1945 in chronological order.

Liberty Ships - This website has been used to check the spelling of all the Liberty ships listed in this convoy (convoy docs don't always have the correct spelling, or they may be difficult to decipher); a few of them had just been delivered in Jan.-1945. Unfortunately, the list no longer appears to be included at this site (unfortunate, because I have 100's of links to it from my website). If I remember correctly, that particular section was hosted by Peter Thompson, who has now moved to a different site, but I cannot find his list of Liberty Ships. I'll leave the link up for now until I can find out whether it's still available somewhere. I did find an identical page here, but as will be seen, the alphabetical links receive an error.

The Empire ships website also lists "Sam"-ships and other Liberty ships.
