*Spelt Norlys in the document (no nationality is given), but tonnage is listed as 3726 gt, which fits with British Nordlys. However, I don't think this was a tanker(?). There was a Panamanian tanker Norlys with Norwegian managers, but this ship was 9892 gt - see my info for Norlys. |

Notes: *Rescue Vessel Dewsbury was on her 15th voyage as such, having started this voyage at Clyde with the westbound Convoy ON 243 on July 3-1944, to Halifax July 16 - returning with HX 301 from Halifax July 27, to Clyde Aug. 8. ("Convoy Rescue Ships", Arnold Hague). I have received an E-mail from Morley Eldridge, telling me that his mother, Ros Eldridge (now 86) returned to England in July-1944 to rejoin her RAF husband, Fl. Lieut. George R. Eldridge, who had been posted back to England some time before. She was on board the Dutch Curacao (Captain Meynderts), which joined the convoy from Sidney, having started out in Montreal. The ship also had several other service wives on board as passengers. Morley Eldridge says "The captain told the passengers after sailing that they would awake to a sight of more ships than anyone had ever seen before. No one took him seriously and assumed that it was a made-up story for security reasons. In the morning, though, there were ships as far as the eye could see in most directions. There was an aircraft carrier on their left with sailors playing hockey, and who sent up a plane to reconnoitre once they saw there were a number of young women on the Curacao! They dropped a large bouquet of vegetables as a present, but it missed the ship and was seen floating as they passed it". It was at first believed that Curacao had been in HX 300 for this voyage - ref. this thread on my Ship Forum - but it was later determined it was HX 301, and as can be seen from the above table, I have since received information to confirm this. (See also this Curacao related posting). Curacao later returned to the U.S. on Aug. 25 with the westbound Convoy ON 250. More information on all the Norwegian ships in this convoy can be found with the help of the alphabet index below, or use the Ship Index to find them. Names of escorts are not available.
