 Some Convoy Voyages:
For information on voyages made in between those mentioned here, please see the documents received from the Norwegian archives and A. Hague's Voyage Record above. Follow the convoy links provided for more details on them, several Norwegian ships took part.

As will be seen when going to Page 1 of the archive documents, Jan was on her way from Cienfuegos to New Orleans when war broke out in Norway on Apr. 9-1940. It looks like she made a voyage to Greenland later that year; arrival/departure Ivigtut is not given, but she was back in the U.S. on Dec. 9. Her 1941 voyages also start on this document.

With a cargo of lumber for Bristol, she's listed in the slow Sydney (C.B.)-U.K. Convoy SC 51 on Oct. 23-1941. She arrived her destination, via Belfast Lough and Holyhead, on Nov. 15 - see Page 2. It'll also be noticed that she later spent a long time at Milford Haven, where she arrived from Bristol on Nov. 23; departure is given as Jan. 1-1942 - according to A. Hague, she had arrived Milford Haven with propeller defects.

In Febr.-1942, we find her in Convoy RU 11 from Reykjavik to the U.K., bound for Clyde. In May that year she shows up in the westbound North Atlantic Convoy ON 94, which originated in Liverpool on May 12 and arrived Halifax on the 25th; Jan's destination is given as Parrsboro, N.S., where she arrived on May 27. Her voyages in this period are shown on Page 3. This convoy will be added to an individual page in my Convoys section, but for now, the ships sailing in it are named on this page. The Norwegian Carmelfjell (returned), Dux, Evanger (Commodore Vessel), Ingertre, Mathilda, Norelg (returned) and Torfinn Jarl are also listed.

With a cargo of lumber for London, Jan headed back across the Atlantic on July 10 with the slow Sydney (C.B.)-U.K. Convoy SC 91; several Norwegian ships took part, as will be seen when following the link. Some of them, including Jan, returned the following month with Convoy ON 122 (in which the Norwegian Trolla was sunk). Acanthus, Eglantine, Montbretia and Potentilla were among the escorts - see also the Commodore's report, which says that Jan and another ship were "pouring out volumes of smoke, they were told that they would be reported, and both Masters replied that they were doing their best but had bad coal" (he even considers that "in great measure the subsequent loss of at least four ships and the loss of life entailed was due to whoever was responsible for the coal supplied to these ships"). Jan was bound for Herring Cove, arriving there, via Halifax, on Sept. 8, according to Page 4. Arnold Hague has her returning to the U.K. in Convoy SC 103*, which originated in New York on Sept. 26 and arrived Liverpool on Oct. 14, but Jan joined this convoy from Halifax, stopping at Oban on the 14th. The Norwegian Ada, Boreas (to Halifax only), Ingerfire, Rio Branco, Rolf Jarl, Solitaire, Carmelfjell, Norfalk, Pan Aruba, Solhavn, Solstad and Vinland are also listed in this convoy.

Skipping now to June-1943, when she's included in Convoy OS 49/KMS 16, which departed Liverpool on June 4 and split up on the 13th. Jan was in the Gibraltar portion, KMS 16*, which arrived there on June 15, however, she continued to Algiers, where she arrived on June 18 - again, several Norwegian ships took part, ref. external link in the table above. Her subsequent voyages (including some 1944 voyages) are shown on Page 5, while convoy information for some of them can be found in the Voyage Record above.

In May-1944, we find her in Convoy KMS 48A*, which left Gibraltar on May 1 and arrived Augusta on the 6th, Jan, however, joined this convoy from Algiers (left Algiers May 4, having previously arrived there from Augusta on Apr. 23 with Convoy GUS 37) and was bound for Bizerta, where she arrived May 6. In July that same year she's listed in Convoy MKS 54*, originating in Port Said on June 28, arriving Gibraltar on July 10, but Jan again joined from Algiers (left July 7), where she had arrived from Bizerta on June 22 with Convoy GUS 43 (both the GUS convoys mentioned here are available at the external website that I've linked to in the Voyage Record; these convoys had originated in Port Said and had the U.S. as their final destination).

The following month she travelled from Gibraltar to the U.K., subsequently making voyages around the U.K. - see Page 6 and Page 7. From the latter document, we also learn that she got to go home to Norway in July-1945. Page 8 shows her voyages to Febr.-1946.

* The entire SC series will be updated and completed, but for now, please go to ships in all SC convoys for the names of other ships sailing in SC 103. All the KMS and MKS convoys will also be added to individual pages in my Convoys section; in the meantime, the ships sailing in them are named in the section listing ships in all KMS convoys and ships in all MKS convoys.

More details on the other Norwegian ships mentioned here is available via the alphabet index at the end of this page, or go to the Master Ship Index.

 POST WAR:
Again from this external page

Sailed as Sula G from 1958 for Caribbean Sea Corp. (Time & Fright Chart.), Monrovia. From 1959, Caribbean Sea Corp., Monrovia, no name change. From 1962, Vialeal Comp. Nav. S.A., Beirut, Lebanon, renamed Marina. Sold for breaking up in Denmark in 1964.

Back to Jan on the "Ships starting with J" page.
