List received from Ted Agar (His source: A diary).
Cargoes have been extracted from a document received from D. Kindell, based on the late Arnold Hague's database - see his listing for HX 148 at Ships in all HX convoys. *When comparing this information with A. Hague's listing for HX 148 at ships in all HX convoys, we see that he has included some ships that are not mentioned in the diary, as follows: In station 71 - The British Empire Day, CAM ship - cargo of grain In station 82 - The Norwegian Gefion - cargo of petrol In station 74 - The British Edward F. Johnson - cargo of petrol and paraffin In station 56 - The British Tuscan Star - refrig., 7 passengers. Became a straggler, no date is given **The unnamed British freighter in station 65 is listed as Beaverhill (refrig, general) *Some of the ships have been given the same station number in the diary, hence my question marks. A. Hague has Argos Hill in station 45, Tongariro in 25, while Tornus is in 73, Anglo Indian in 75. He adds that Argos Hill straggled, as did the Norwegian Grey County and Mirlo; dates not given. Celtic Star arrived Loch Ewe on Sept. 15. |
Notes: Socony and Tongariro collided on Sept. 9, so it makes sense that Tongariro was in station 25. Socony sank, 2 died. As with all the lists from Ted Agar the ships' names appear to be given according to the time they left the pier to form the convoy, starting with the Norwegian Herbrand at 09:10, and with a few minutes between each ship, ending with the British Tongariro at 14:35. The escorting HMS Alaunia departed 5 minutes earlier than the latter. I've listed them according to nationality, keeping the sequence of departure within each nationality. |
Sequence of departure according to nationality: The British Manchester Merchant (2 bombers - this was the 2nd ship to leave, almost an hour after Herbrand), New Zealand Star, Celtic Star, Ardenvohr, Empire Silver, Lochkatrine, Brittany, Atlantian, Cornish City, City of Barcelona, British Confidence, Empire Hawk, Clan Alpine, Talthybius, Kaipaki, Tornus, Wayfarer, San Demetrio, Vancouver, Anglo Indian, Kars, Acavus, Pomella, British Faith, Socony, Nicoya, Harpasa, Diloma, Argos Hill, Laurelwood, Tongariro, and the unnamed British freighter (with 2 short open decks), which A. Hague has listed as Beaverhill. The Dutch Corilla and Leerdam. The Norwegian Herbrand, Ørnefjell, James Hawson, Grey County, Stigstad, Idefjord, Egda, the Panamanian Norvinn (Norwegian managers, therefore listed on this website), Vivi, and Mirlo - see links within the table above for more information on all these ships. A. Hague names the following 18 escorts (extracted from this list of HX convoy escorts received from D. Kindell; dates are European style, day/month/year): To the next HX convoy in my list HX 149 |
