Also, the Rescue Vessel Zaafaran was with the convoy for a while - see Notes below.
*When comparing this information with A. Hague's listing for HX 149 at ships in all HX convoys, we see that he has also included some ships that are not mentioned in the diary, as follows: **The un-named Norwegian tanker in station 73 is listed as Kollbjørg (cargo of petrol) and the British tanker in station 25 was Hopemount (cargo of fuel oil). *Norman Prince and Calobre are said to have returned to port - Norman Prince is listed in HX 150, while Calobre does not show up until Convoy SC 50 the following month (see Ships in all SC convoys). ** For info, North King is listed in Convoy PQ 1, which left Hvalfjord (Iceland) for Archangel on Sept. 29-1941. (See this external site). See also Convoy QP 2. |
Notes: The first ship to leave was Geo. H. Jones at 09:05, and with a few minutes between each ship, the last was the escorting HMS Ascania leaving Pier 28 at 15:20, 20 minutes after City of Hankow. Counting this escort, there are 57 ships in the diary. I've listed the names according to nationality, keeping the sequence of departure within each nationality. |
The ships left port in the following order: The British Geo. H. Jones, Dorelian, Tilapa, Pacific Grove, British Endurance, San Ernesto, British Consul, Induna, Cristales, Athelchief (this was formerly the Norwegian Kongsten), Norman Prince (returned - joined next convoy), Robert F. Hand, Malancha, British Integrity, Empire Steel, Winamac, Empire Ortolan, Geo. W. McKnight, Janeta, Valldemosa, Clan Murdoch, Carelia, British Hussar, Athelmonarch, Solarium, Graiglas, British Resolution, Tricula, Halizones, Lulworth Hill, Peter Maersk (Danish, under Ministry of War Transport), British Sincerity, Stuart Prince, Royal Star, City of Exeter, City of Ripon, City of Hankow and an unnamed British tanker (Hopemount, according to A. Hague). The Norwegian Aristophanes, Daghild, Brasil, Thorsholm, Innerøy, Thorshov, Somerville, an unnamed Norwegian tanker (this was Kollbjørg, according to A. Hague), Glittre, Lise, Harpefjell, Norvik (Panamanian flag, Norwegian managers and therefore included on this website) and Brant County, see links provided within the table above for more information on these ships. The Belgian Elisabeth van Belgie, the Polish Lechistan, the Dutch Bennekom, the Panamanian North King and Calobre (and Panamanian Norvik, as mentioned). Arnold Hague ("Convoy Rescue Ships 1940-1945") says the Rescue Vessel Zaafaran was with this convoy, from joining to Clyde, Sept. 20-Sept. 25-1941. She had been with Convoy ON 16 from Clyde until detached, Sept. 14-Sept. 20, and was on her 9th voyage as Rescue Vessel (having been requisitioned as such in Oct.-1940). A. Hague names the following 18 escorts (extracted from this list of HX convoy escorts received from D. Kindell; dates are European style, day/month/year): To the next HX convoy in my list HX 150 |
