CONVOY HX 150
Departed Halifax on Sept. 16-1941 and arrived Liverpool on the 30th (Arnold Hague's The Allied Convoy System" gives 44 ships). |
||||||||
Received from Ted Agar. (His source: A diary).
Cargoes have been extracted from a document received from D. Kindell, based on the late Arnold Hague's database - see his listing for HX 150 at Ships in all HX convoys. Underlined ships returned to port (according to A. Hague), except those that are linked, which will automatically be underlined. The Norwegian Varanger, however, did return. For info, some of the ships in this convoy later returned with the westbound Convoy ON 26. See also ON 30. Br=British, Norw=Norwegian, Am=American, Ice=Icelandic, Bel=Belgian, Du=Dutch. |

Norman Prince had returned to port from the previous convoy, HX 149.
Also, the British Umtata and the Dutch Phrontis left port that day, but the author of the diary did not know their pendant numbers. According to A. Hague, Umtata had station 36, general cargo and 88 passengers, while the Dutch ship had station 65, general cargo, 16 passengers. *When comparing this information with A. Hague's listing for HX 150 at ships in all HX convoys, we see that he has also included the British Empress of Asia, general cargo and 80 mails, station 52. He adds that she probably also carried troops - detached Sept. 25. 2 ships have been given the same station number in the diary - A. Hague has Braganza in station 26, Varanger in station 66. The latter returned to port and subsequently joined the slow Convoy SC 45, departing Sydney, C.B. on Sept. 18-1941, arriving Liverpool Oct. 4 (will be added - see Ships in all SC convoys). Dan-y-Bryn and Lindenhall are also listed in SC 45. A. Hague has Jupiter in station 74, Sepia in station 73. Godafoss detached for Iceland on Sept. 25. * It looks like Ville d'Anvers must have detached for Iceland - she's listed in Convoy PQ 1 for Archangel, which left Hvalfjord on Sept. 29-1941. She returned with Convoy QP 2 from Archangel on Nov. 3. Dan-y-Bryn later sailed to Archangel with Convoy PQ 4, leaving Hvalfjord on Nov. 17-1941 - see also Convoy QP 4 (this external site has more details on PQ 1 and PQ 4). |
Notes: The first ship to leave was Port Alma at 07:13 (possibly the Commodore Ship?), and with a few minutes between each ship, the last was the escorting HMS Ranpura some time after 16:00 that afternoon (appears to have departed over 3 hours after the last ship El Argentino had left at 12:43). Counting the escorting vessel, the names of 47 ships are given. I've listed the names according to nationality, keeping the sequence of departure within each nationality. |
List of ships according to nationality: The British Port Alma, Prometheus, Refast, British Fusilier, Empire Faith, Umgeni (passengers), Lindenhall, Delius, Dorcasia, Coimbra, Norman Prince, San Amado, Daronia, San Fabian, Dan-y-Bryn, Sicilian Prince, Cairnesk, Port Nicholson, Recorder, Trader, Nigaristan *, Hoperange, Tudor Star, Collegian, Sepia, Tudor Prince, Umtata (no pendant No. given), and El Argentino.
The Norwegian Heina, Fenris, Solfonn, Havkong, Garonne, Thorshavet, Topdalsfjord, Varanger (according to A. Hague, she returned to port) and Braganza. The American Lake Osweya and Providence, the Icelandic Godafoss, the Belgian Ville d'Anvers, the Dutch Clavella, Jupiter, Blommersdijk, Phrontis (no pendant No. given), and Ocana. A. Hague names the following escorts (extracted from this list of HX convoy escorts, also received from D. Kindell; dates are European style, day/month/year): Related external link: To the next HX convoy in my list HX 151 |
