M/T Thorshavn To Thorshavn on the "Ships starting with T" page.
Thorshavn is listed among the ships in Convoy HGF 24 from Gibraltar to the U.K. in March/Apr.-1940. In the middle of Apr. she appears in Convoy OG 25 going in the other direction, having started out from the U.K. on Apr. 8 in Convoy OA 125. She was bound for Curacao on that occasion. In May-1940 we find her in the Gibraltar-U.K. Convoy HGF 30. The Norwegian Norma is also listed. At the end of that month, Thorshavn shows up in Convoy OB 158, departing Liverpool on May 30-1940. This convoy joined up with Convoy OA 158 on June 2, forming the Gibraltar convoy OG 32F, which arrived there on June 7. Thorshavn's destination is given as Aruba, and she had station 75 of the convoy. The Norwegian Abraham Lincoln, Buesten and Kosmos II are also included. The external websites that I've linked to below have more on these convoys. In June/July she was in the Halifax-U.K. Convoy HX 53, bound for Portsmouth with Admiralty fuel, station 65, and later joined Convoy OB 203, which left Liverpool on Aug. 24-1940, dispersed on the 28th. In Dec. that same year she can be found in Convoy HX 94, bound for Liverpool with fuel oil, joining the convoy from Bermuda. In the middle of Jan.-1941 we find her in Convoy OB 273, leaving Liverpool on Jan. 12, dispersed on Jan. 16. She was scheduled for Convoy HX 124 as well as HX 125 in the spring of 1941, but did not sail. She shows up again in Convoy HX 128 in May/June, bound for Clyde with fuel oil, together with a few other Norwegian ships. Thorshavn subsequently joined Convoy OB 341, which departed Liverpool on June 30 and dispersed on July 6. Again, please see the external link below for information on the OB convoys. Thorshavn went back to the U.K. with Convoy HX 143, which left Halifax on Aug. 5-1941 and arrived Liverpool on the 20th. The Norwegian Belinda, Mosli, Andrea Brøvig, Katy, Ravnefjell, Carmelfjell, Salamis, Primero, Benwood and an unnamed tanker, possibly/probably Petter were also in this convoy. Thorshavn subsequently returned across the ocean in the middle of the following month with the westbound North Atlantic Convoy ON 17, leaving Liverpool on Sept. 17. At the beginning of Nov.-1941 she joined Convoy HX 158 (as far as Iceland), and at the end of that month we find her in the westbound Convoy ON 39*, joining the convoy from Iceland (ON 39 had left Liverpool on Nov. 21, dispersed on Dec. 4). She's said to have returned to the U.K. with Convoy HX 167, which left Halifax on Dec. 27-1941, but I'm not entirely sure this information is correct, as she's not included in this convoy at the external link below, which is based on A. Hague's own research, although Thorshavet is listed instead; perhaps this is a matter of a simple mis-interpretation of the name? Other Norwegian ships in this convoy were O. A. Knudsen, Suderøy, Bralanta, Meline, Noreg, O. A. Knudsen, Abraham Lincoln, and Sandanger among several others. There's now a big gap in my voyage information for Thorshavn, however, the external website already mentioned will help fill in some of these gaps - please follow the instructions provided at the link. As will be seen, she made voyages from Bombay to Colombo, and from Bombay to Bandar Abbas in 1943, and from Port Said to Hampton Roads and back in 1944/1945, among several other voyages. The next convoy I have her in, with destination Corpus Christi, is the westbound Convoy ON 296* in Apr.-1945 (she had previously arrived the U.K. with the eastbound HX 346, according to the external site below). She subsequently returned to the U.K. in May-1945 with Convoy HX 357.
Sold on June 13-1947 to Transoceanic Corp., Panama, renamed Transoman. Scrapped in 1954. Other ships by this name: Thor Dahl later had 2 ships by this name, one M/T built 1950, sold Panama 1963 (Mar del Plata) - the other M/S (bulk) built 1965, sold Piræus 1973 (Athena's Temple, later Mair).
