  Voyage Record
From Febr.-1940 to Oct.-1945:

(Received from Don Kindell - His source: The late Arnold Hague's database).

Follow the convoy links provided for more information on each (where the Convoy column is left blank, it means that convoy is not known). It'll be noticed that some of the external listings are incomplete.

Errors may exist (this could also mean that she may not have sailed in all the convoys mentioned here), and some voyages are missing.

 Some Convoy Voyages:
For information on voyages made in between those mentioned here, please see the documents received from the National Archives of Norway and A. Hague's Voyage Record above. Follow the convoy links provided for further details; the Commodore's notes and/or escorts' reports are also available for some of them and several Norwegian ships took part.

Regin is listed in the original document for the Norway-U.K. Convoy HN 10 in Febr.-1940, bound for Hull with general cargo. Early in March, A. Hague has included her in Convoy ON 17 from the U.K. to Norway and at the end of that month Regin, again with a general cargo for Hull, is listed in the Advance Sailing Telegram for Convoy HN 22, but it looks like this AST covers both convoys HN 22 and HN 23A and that she, in fact, joined Convoy HN 23A on March 30, thereby ending up in allied service (the Germans invaded Norway on Apr. 9). Regin, which had served as Commodore Vessel for this convoy, arrived Hull on Apr. 7 - see Page 1. It'll be noticed, when going to my page about HN 23A, that she's mentioned in the escorting HMS Afridi's report, whose commander says she "proved unable to steer a course, nor to maintain her speed except in calm". She's also mentioned further up in the report, saying she steered an incorrect course.

In Aug.-1940 she's listed, together with Eastern Star, Fido, Helle, Solferino, Trolla and Vigsnes, in Convoy OA 193, which left Methil on Aug. 3 and dispersed on the 7th - ref. external link provided within the Voyage Record. Her destination is not given, but from the archive document, we learn that she arrived Sydney, C.B. on Aug. 19, proceeding to Pugwash that same day. She headed back to the U.K. on Sept. 2 in the slow Convoy SC 3, from which the Norwegian Lotos and others were sunk - follow the links for details. Regin had a cargo of lumber for Grimsby and arrived there on Sept. 28. With Berto, Eastern Star, Erica, Evviva, Granfoss, Iron Baron, Stargard and Trolla, she later shows up in Convoy OB 240, which originated in Liverpool on Nov. 8 and dispersed on the 13th, Regin arriving Sydney, C.B. on Dec. 2, according to A. Hague (she had started out from Oban on Nov. 9). Again, see external link in the table above.

Early in the new year we find her, with a cargo of pit props for West Hartlepool, in Convoy SC 18, which left Halifax on Jan. 2-1941. She arrived Hartlepool on Febr. 9 and now made several voyages around the U.K.; see Page 2 - convoy information for some of these can be found in A. Hague's Voyage Record. At the end of July that year, she's listed in the westbound North Atlantic Convoy ON 1, originating in Liverpool on July 26. The convoy was dispersed on Aug. 9, and according to Page 3, she arrived Sydney, C.B. on Aug. 11, having started out from Loch Ewe on July 28. Having made a voyage to Carleton, she returned to Sydney, C.B. in order to join Convoy SC 42 back to the U.K. on Aug. 30 (several ships were sunk, including the Norwegian Stargard, Regin rescuing 9 of her survivors). Arosa, Vestland and Bestum also took part. The book "Attack & Sink - The Battle of the Atlantic Summer 1941" by Bernard Edwards has also included Måkefjell*, Askeladden, Inger Elisabeth, Knoll, Lancing and Storaas in this convoy. Please follow the link to SC 42 for details on this battle and the names of ships sunk, as well as the names of all the ships in the convoy. See also the external link at the end of this page. Regin had a cargo of lumber and judging from the information found on the archive document, she was bound for London.

* The Memorial for Seamen in Stavern, Norway places Måkefjell in Newcastle on Sept. 2-1941, saying the cook, Oddvar Marius Moen, was killed on board during an air raid there on that date. Convoy SC 42 did not arrive Liverpool until Sept. 15, according to Arnold Hague's "The Allied Convoy System". It appears the memorial has the wrong date for this attack (or the wrong ship?). Måkefjell's Voyage Record for this period shows that she did leave Sydney, C.B. for the U.K. on Aug. 30-1941 and arrived Loch Ewe on Sept. 18.

Regin's 1942 voyages start on Page 3 and continue on Page 4, Page 5 and Page 6. The latter document also has some of her 1943 voyages (again, convoy information for some of them can be found in the Voyage Record). That spring, Regin made a voyage from Milford to Algiers in station 13 of Convoy OS 48/KMS 15 - ref. external link in the table above for more on this convoy, which started out in Liverpool on May 20 and split up on the 29th. According to Page 7, Regin sailed from Milford Haven on May 19 and she was in the Gibraltar portion of the convoy (KMS 15*), which arrived there on May 30, while the OS portion continued to Freetown. Ships that were not bound for Gibraltar then continued to their various destination, still in KMS 15 (which had Port Said as its final destination); Brisk, South America and Tautra were also in company. Regin arrived Algiers on June 5.

I also have a snippet of information saying that she was in Alexandria in July-1944, departing for Tripoli/Augusta/Naples/Malta on July 25 - left Augusta for Naples on Aug. 9 - this agrees with the details found on Page 8. At the end of that month she made a voyage from Benghazi to Alexandria, where she arrived Sept. 2, A. Hague suggesting she may have joined Convoy KMS 60* for this voyage, together with Norelg. This convoy had sailed from Gibraltar on Aug. 23; as already mentioned, Regin's voyage had started out in Benghazi. He later has her, along with Norelg and Norsol, in Convoy MKS 62*, which arrived Gibraltar from Port Said on Sept. 27; Regin, however, joined from Alexandria, having left on Sept. 17 and arrived Augusta on Sept. 23 (for info, this convoy joined up with the Freetown Convoy SL 171 on Sept. 30, proceeding to the U.K. as a combined convoy, but of course, Regin was not present at that time, she proceeded to Naples from Augusta).

From Page 9, we learn that she got to go home to Norway in the fall of 1945.

It'll be noticed, when going through the various archive documents, that she sometimes had long stays at Tyne, and also in other ports (for instance, Alexandria and Haifa).

* The KMS and MKS convoys will be added to individual pages in my Convoys section in due course, with more details on each, but for now, the ships sailing in them (and escorts) are named in the section listing ships in all KMS convoys and ships in all MKS convoys.

More info on all the other Norwegian ships named on this page can be found via the alphabet index below, or go to the Master Ship Index.

Other ships by this name: This company had previously had another Regin, originally delivered in 1883 as Behera to owners in Sunderland, 1498 gt. Sold to Norway in 1913 and renamed Torkel, then Asplund in 1921. Sold to Hannestads Rederi A/S (Marcus Hannestad), Halden in 1929 and renamed Regin. Ran aground in Aug.-1938. Norway had also lost 2 steamships by this name to WW I. The 1st was built 1913, 1844 gt (E. Lund) - struck a mine and sank in the North Sea on Febr. 23-1915. The 2nd was built 1915, 1846 gt (E. & N. Chr. Evensen) - torpedoed and sunk by the German UB-49 off Cape Mele near Genua while on a voyage from Genua for Almeira in ballast on Dec. 20-1917.
