D/S Primo To Primo on the "Ships starting with P" page.
Owner: A/S Pavo Timber carrier, built by Smith's Dock Co. Ltd, South Bank, Middlesbrough, launched in 1930 (Yard Number 909). Triple expansion 3 cylinder by Smith's Dock. Cylinders: 18" 30" 50".
Primo can be found among the ships in the westbound Convoy ON 128 in Sept.-1942. This convoy had started out in Liverpool on Sept. 5, but Primo joined from Halifax, and arrived New York on Sept. 24. Follow the link for cruising order and a detailed narrative of the passage; several Norwegian ships took part. According to the external site that I've linked to below, she later joined the slow Convoy SC 106, which left New York on Oct. 16-1942 and arrived Liverpool on Nov. 5, but Primo was only bound for Halifax on that occasion. The Norwegian Mimona, Sirehei and Sommerstad are also listed in this convoy. Later that month we find her in the westbound Convoy ON 142, which had originated in Liverpool on Oct. 30-1942, but Primo again joined from Halifax (the convoy arrived New York on Nov. 21). ON 142 will be added to an individual page in my Convoys section in due course, with more information on it, but in the meantime, the ships sailing in it are named on this page. As will be seen, the Norwegian Bestik (returned), Carmelfjell, Fjordheim, Jenny, Kirsten B, Norvarg, Rio Verde, Sevilla, Solitaire, Temeraire and Vinland are also listed. Going back to the external site already mentioned, she's subsequently listed in Convoy SC 112, together with Acasta, Aragon, Borgholm, Dageid, Fjordheim, Garnes, Harpefjell, Heimgar, Norjerv, Sir James Clark Ross, Solitaire and Tropic Star. This convoy departed New York on Dec. 4-1942 and had Liverpool as its final destination, but Primo was again only bound for Halifax. The same site also has her in Convoy SC 119, departing New York on Febr. 3-1943, arriving Liverpool on the 22nd. Other Norwegian ships in this convoy were Askot, Boreas, Iris, Iron Baron, James Hawson and Kirsten B. Please follow the instructions provided at the external link below for information on Primo's other convoy voyages. As will be seen, she made voyages to Greenland, Trinidad and other ports.
According to a posting to my Guestbook, she had the name Olympia by 1956, owned by O/Y Thelmia A/B (Thelmita A/B?), Sideby (P. Molander, Bjørneborg). The poster has also sent me 2 pictures of the ship when named Olympia, taken around 1955, discharging coal in Rønne, Bornholm - posted further up on this page. Related external link: Back to Primo on the "Ships starting with P" page. Haugesund had a steamer by this name in WW I - delivered in March-1908 as Falstad to Grefstad & Herlofsons D/S A/S, Arendal, 1037 gt. From 1913 she sailed as Remis for A. O. Lindvig, Christiania. Purchased by John K. Haaland, Haugesund in May-1915 and renamed Primo. Torpedoed by UB-117 on Sept. 18-1918, 3,5 n. miles north/northwest of Godrevy light. See also this posting to my Ship Forum.
