 Misc. Voyages:
For information on voyages made in between those mentioned here, please see the documents received from the National Archives of Norway and A. Hague's Voyage Record above. Follow the convoy links provided for further details; escorts' reports are also available for some of them and several Norwegian ships took part.

Ask saved the 15 survivors from the Swedish Lars Magnus Trozelli in the North Sea on Jan 1-1940. A Norwegian seaman, Sverre O. Bergesen, died when this ship sank following an explosion, having been torpedoed by U-58; not sure whether he had worked on board the Swedish ship, or whether he died in the rescue operation. See the link provided at the end of this page for more info on this attack.

According to A. Hague, Ask took part in the U.K.-Norway Convoy ON 11 in Febr.-1940. Later that month she's listed, with a cargo of ore for Middlesbrough, in the original document for Convoy HN 15 from Norway to the U.K. (she had initially started out in Convoy HN 14, but put back). A. Hague now has her returning to Norway in the middle of March with Convoy ON 20, and on March 27, we find her in Convoy HN 22, bound for Tyne in ballast. According to Page 1 of the archive documents, she later arrived Middlesbrough on Apr. 1, and it looks like she was still there when war broke out in Norway on Apr. 9.

In May-1940 she's listed, with destination Rouen, in Convoy OA 144, which left Southend on May 8 and dispersed on the 11th (the Norwegian Kongsgaard is also named, ref. link in the table above). Ask detached from the convoy on May 9; arrival Rouen is not given by A. Hague, but according to the archive document she arrived there that same day. Early the following month she was briefly in Convoy OA 160, which left Southend on June 2 and dispersed 2 days later. She was bound for St. Nazaire on that occasion, and is said to have joined from an FS convoy. This may have been FS 184, in which she's included, together with Diana, Måkefjell and Tautra, at the external site that I've linked to in the Voyage Record. Ask arrived her destination St. Nazaire independently on June 5. Note that she's also listed in Convoy 49 B from Brest to Casablanca shortly thereafter; departure June 12, arrival June 19. If this information is correct, it looks like she barely missed being interned, like so many other Norwegian ships, when France capitulated a few days later. However, this voyage to Casablanca is not mentioned on Page 1, which says she arrived Villa Real on June 18, having started out from St. Nazaire on the 10th.

With iron ore for Hull, she returned in the Gibraltar-U.K. Convoy HG Y, leaving Gibraltar on July 2-1940. Going back to the archive document, we learn that she arrived Manchester on July 12/13. Later that month she appears in Convoy OG 39*, which departed Liverpool on July 26 and arrived Gibraltar on Aug. 6. Ask was again bound for Villa Real, where she arrived on Aug. 5, later returning to the U.K. with Convoy HG 41, departing Gibraltar on Aug. 11. She was bound for Garston with pyrites and arrived there on Aug. 25. The Commodore's narrative is also available for this convoy. The following month, she's listed as bound for Pomaron in Convoy OG 42*, which left Liverpool on Sept. 4 and arrived Gibraltar on the 16th. However, Ask had detached from the convoy the day before, arriving her destination independently on the 16th, remaining there for over 3 weeks. With a cargo of iron ore, she headed back to the U.K. again on Oct. 9 with Convoy HG 45 from Gibraltar, bound for Garston, where she arrived (via Londonderry and Liverpool) on Nov. 1, according to Page 1.

* The OG convoys will be added to my Convoys section in due course, with more information on each; in the meantime, the ships sailing in them (and escorts) are named on the page listing ships in all OG convoys.

Ask was subsequently in service around the U.K. for the rest of 1940, as well as through 1941, 1942, 1943 and well into 1944. It'll be noticed, when going to the various archive documents, that she occasionally had long stays in port.

On Jan. 26-1941, she was in a convoy off Barrow when a Ju 88 attacked, but bombs missed. Checking A. Hague's Voyage Record, we see that he has her on a voyage from Blyth to Southend in Convoy FS 395 on that date (together with Kolsdal, Libra, Ringen, Sitona, Skum and Tautra), but as can be seen, she may also have been in FS 394 (with Spind and Sollund) - had she started out in this convoy and returned to port following the attack, later joining FS 395? According to Page 2, she had left Blyth for London on Jan. 24 and arrived Gravesend on the 28th. The aircraft is said to have been shot down by a British ship sailing in front of Ask.

A report written by the captain of D/S Varøy, states that Ask was in Convoy FN 33, in which Varøy sank following a collision on Oct. 8-1942. This convoy is designated FN 833 (FN 33 / Phase 9) by Arnold Hague - again, see the Voyage Record above. Stirlingville is also included (the listing is incomplete).

Ask took part in "Overlord" (the invasion of Normandie). According to "Nortraships flåte" she arrived Omaha Beach on June 11-1944, leaving again on the 26th. In this time period A. Hague has included her, together with Fagerbro, Jernfjeld, Leka and Lisbeth, in Convoy EBC 8, which left Barry on June 10 (according to Page 11, Ask left Newport that day) and arrived Seine Bay on the 14th, and (with Måkefjell and Torfinn Jarl) in Convoy FBC 9, leaving Seine Bay on June 24, arriving Bristol Channel on June 26. He has also listed her in several subsequent EBC and returning FBC convoys, up to Oct.-1944.

Shortly after VE Day, she's listed as bound for Ghent in the Southend-Antwerp Convoy TAM 167, which departed Southend on May 13-1945 and arrived Antwerp the next day - her voyages in this period can be found on Page 14. She subsequently returned to the U.K. with Convoy ATM 157 on May 17 (links in the table above).

Page 15 shows her voyages to Apr.-1946, and as can be seen, she went home to Norway in the fall of 1945, making another voyage home just before Christmas that year (and again in Febr.-1946).

More information on all the other Norwegian ships mentioned here can be found via the alphabet index at the end of this page, or go to the Master Ship Index.

Norway (Johan Chr. Giertsen, Bergen) had previously had another Ask, built in 1887, 419 gt, ran aground off Jæren in Jan.-1891. That same year another Ask was delivered to the same company, 703 gt, disappeared in Nov.-1897.
