CONVOY ON 11 – U.K.-Norway

Left Methil on Febr. 9-1940 and arrived Norway on the 12th.
Received from Don Kindell - His source: The late Arnold Hague's research.

Stations are not known.

According to A. Hague, the following 22 ships sailed in this convoy:

British Albuera
Norwegian Ask
British Baron Blythswood (arrived Narvik on Febr. 15)
Norwegian Bessheim
Danish Finland
Norwegian Hjalmar Wessel
Swedish Iris
Norwegian Jetta*
Norwegian Leka
Danish Nordborg
Estonian Olev
Swedish Osric
Danish Rikke (A. Hague lists this ship as Norwegian)
Norwegian Risøy
Norwegian Roy
Norwegian Sado
Finnish Sarmatia
Norwegian Solhavn
Norwegian Vaga
Norwegian Vesla
Norwegian Vestmanrød
Finnish Wiima

* Jetta is also listed in the previous convoy, ON 10 - she could not have been in both.

Note that a document found at the Public Records Office at Kew, listing all U.K.-Norway Convoys, states that Convoy ON 11 had 27 ships; 7 British, 13 Norwegian, 1 Swedish, 2 Danish, 3 Finnish, 1 Estonian. 3 detached en route (not for Norway).

Reports on the convoy's crossing are not available to me.

All the Norwegian ships mentioned here are listed on this website - see the Master Ships Index.

Escorts:
See this document, listing escorts for all HN and ON convoys, as well as this external site (scroll down to Febr. 9), which adds that blockship Branksea was included in this convoy, bound for Scapa Flow, towed by the tug Prizeman, and that the submarine Narwhal of the convoy lost touch during the night of Febr. 10/11. The sub was ordered to patrol and then return to Rosyth. Anti-aircraft cruiser Cairo left the Humber on the 10th and joined the convoy for anti-aircraft support on the 11th.
