CONVOY UR 23

Convoy UR 23 Cruising Order
Left Loch Ewe at 19:00 on May 8-1942, arrived Reykjavik May 12
Received from Tony Cooper, England - His source: Public Records Office, Kew.

For info, many of these had previously arrived from Halifax with Convoy SC 79.

Note also that several of these ships later joined Convoy PQ 16 to Russia on May 21, they have been denoted *. Many returned at the end of June with Convoy QP 13, others are listed in QP 14 in Sept.-1942 (the external link at the bottom of this page has more info).

Notes:
Commodore N. H. Gale, R.N.R. was in Ocean Voice, Vice Commodore was the captain of Lowther Castle. Rescue ships were the rear ships of columns.

Average speed: 7.48 knots.

Escorts (met Loch Ewe at 19:00 May 8 - parted 15:30 May 12 off Reykjavik):
HMS Shikari, Quadrille, St. Kenan, Celia, Stora?, Thirlmere.
HMS Achates joined at 13:00 May 10 in 60 54N 12 40W - parted company at 15:30 May 12 at Reykjavik (went on to escort Convoy PQ 16).

Air Escort:
06:15 May 10 - 60 17N 10 33W - left 18:30 in 61 18N 14 00W.
