Commodore was in Fort Crevecoeur, Vice Commodore in Fort Yukon.

Laurelwood and Luculus were escort oilers.

Fort Romaine proceeded as an independent.

A cruiser and 2 of the escort carriers were within the convoy, as was the damaged frigate Mounsey which was returning for repairs (see RA 61).

No merchant ships were lost, but the escorting destroyer HMS Cassandra was torpedoed by U-365 on Dec. 11 and had to return to Murmansk for repairs. The next day the Norwegian Tunsberg Castle struck a mine and sank (follow link for details). Dec. 12 also saw an air attack by 9 torpedo bombers, 2 aircraft were lost (see Rathlin below).

The escort had left Kola shortly before the convoy in order to attack the assembled U-boats, at which time U-387 was sunk by HMS Bamborough Castle. U-365 was also sunk during this passage, by 813 Squadron from HMS Campania on Dec. 13.

Rathlin was on her 21st voyage as Rescue Vessel, having started this voyage with JW 62 from Loch Ewe on Nov. 28, to Kola Inlet Dec. 7-1944, returning with RA 62 from Kola to Clyde, Dec. 10-Dec. 20. She was attacked twice by aircraft on Dec. 12 and shot down the second attacker. She may also have fatally damaged the first attacker, though it was not seen to crash. However, German records report the loss of 2 Ju 88 aircraft that day. (She subsequently joined the westbound North Atlantic Convoy ON 277).

Escorts (same as for JW 62 - not included on this site, but available at the last external link below):
Dec. 10-Dec. 17: Canadian Frigates Monnow, Nene, Port Colborne, St John and Stormont, and the British Loch Alvie.
Remaining escorts left on Dec. 18 and Dec. 19:
Cruiser Bellona, escort carriers Campania and Nairana, sloops Cygnet, Lapwing and Lark, frigates Bahamas, Somaliland, Tavy and Tortola, corvettes Allington Castle, Bamborough Castle and the Norwegian Tunsberg Castle and Eglantine, destroyers Beagle, Bulldog, Caesar, Cambrian, Caprice, Cassandra, Keppel, Obedient, Offa, Onslaught, Onslow, Oribi, Orwell and Westcott.
