Additionally, the British Empire Bard was in this convoy, but returned to Murmansk. |
Commodore was in Fort Crevecoeur, Vice Commodore in Empire Tourist and Rear Commodore in Paul Hamilton Hayne. San Adolfo, San Ambrosio and San Cirilo were escort oilers. As can be seen the cruiser Black Prince and the escort carrier Chaser were within the convoy during the passage. * "Convoys to Russia" states with regard to this Rescue Vessel: A number of U-boats had assembled to attack the previous incoming convoy (JW 57 - see 3rd external link below), but RA 57 avoided these thanks to the efforts of Russian aircraft as well as a wide diversion to the east upon leaving the Kola Inlet. However, U-boats made contact on March 4, U-703 sinking Empire Tourist (no casualties). That same day a Swordfish from Chaser damaged U-472, subsequently sunk by Onslaught. On March 5 another Swordfish sank U-366, then U-973 the following day - 2 other U-boats were damaged. (All the attacking aircraft came from 816 Squadron operating from Chaser, which had been prevented from operating her aircraft for the first 2 days, owing to storms).
