CONVOY ON 4
(The majority of these ships were lost during the war, some already the following month). Br=British, Du=Dutch, Gr=Greek, Norw=Norwegian, Sw=Swedish * Leighton had originally been scheduled for the previous convoy, ON 3. Also, the Rescue Vessel Perth was with this convoy from Aug. 5 until detached on Aug. 11, on her 6th voyage as such. She returned to Clyde with Convoy HX 142, Aug. 12-Aug. 17-1941. ("Convoy Rescue Ships 1940-1941", Arnold Hague). Commodore's notes are not available. For info, Empire Gull had previously arrived the U.K. with Convoy HX 136, (see also Convoy SC 48, where Empire Gull and Rym are listed). Escorts (received from Don Kindell, whose own work, covering "Royal & other Navies Day-by-Day in World War 2" can be viewed at this website): All the Norwegian ships in this convoy are included on this website. More information on them can be found via the alphabet index below, or via the Master Ship Index. Related external link: To the next ON convoy in my list ON 5
Scheduled to leave Liverpool on Aug. 5-1941, but was delayed and left on the 6th - dispersed in 52 40N 47 26W Aug. 18
(Arnold Hague gives 50 ships).

Comparing the above with a list of ships in Convoy ON 4 received from Don Kindell, based on A. Hague's own research, I find that A. Hague has listed the ship in station 93 as Greek Michalis* instead of Michalios (there were Greek ships by both names), adding that she returned. In addition to the above ships, he has also included the following in this convoy (not listed on the A 1 form):
British Baron Elgin.
British Collegian, with a note saying "possibly in this convoy though not listed".
British Cragpool - returned (does not show up again until ON 10).
Danish Delaware in tow of HMS Salvonia, bound for Iceland.
Polish Kordecki - for Iceland.
British Macbrae - for Iceland.
Norwegian Reiaas - for Iceland.
British Ronan - returned (listed in ON 6).
** Nea and Ogmore Castle had initially joined Convoy ON 1, but returned to port.
Notes:
Commodore G. N. Jones was in Loreto.
Vice Commodore was the captain of Umberleigh.
Rear Commodore was the captain of Baron Napier.
Mount Rhodope had arrived with HX 137.
Aug. 6-Aug. 12: Snowdrop, Seagull.
Aug. 7-Aug. 12: Arab, Ayrshire, Heather, Orchis, Picotee, St. Loman.
Aug. 8-Aug. 12: Beagle, Boadicea, Lady Madeleine, Norwich City, Roxborough, Salisbury.
Aug. 11-Aug. 18: Bittersweet, Candytuft, Fennel, Ramsey.
Aug. 15-Aug. 18: Orillia, Primrose, Alberni.
