CONVOY HX 214
Departed New York City on Nov. 3-1942, and arrived Liverpool on the 18th.
Arnold Hague's "The Allied Convoy System" gives 27 ships in this convoy.

Transcribed from several documents received from Roger Griffiths (Advance Sailing Telegram and A 1 form) - His source: Public Records Office, Kew.

The ships are listed in the order in which they appear on the various documents.

Crossed out ships did not sail, underlined ships returned to port.

For info, some of the ships in this convoy are also listed in the westbound Convoy ON 153 in Dec.-1942 (see also ON 155 and KMS 6).

Additionally, the A 1 form lists the following ships (not mentioned in Advance Sailing Telegram):
Fort Townshend, station 23, detached for Halifax at 08:30 on Nov. 6, escorted by Kamsack (43 17N 61 53W)
USS Pontiac, station 21, USS Laramie, station 22, both detached for St. John's on Nov. 7.

Notes:
Commodore T. L. Owen, R.N.R. was in Hilary, Vice Commodore was the captain of Umgeni.
2 Rear Commodore's vessels are named, namely Fort McMurray and Nicania.

Average speed: 8.7 knots. (Daily positions of convoy at 08:00 BST are available on request).

The Commodore's notes are in a very tiny handwriting, and hard to decipher in places, but here's what I can make out:

City of Exeter returned to port following a collision with Atlantic off Ambrose Lightship on Nov. 3.
Ocean Angel left convoy on Nov. 4 with damage caused by ? derrick, in the company of escort Timmins (position looks like 40 01N 69 06W, and time 10:45).
Atlantic was sent into Halifax on Nov. 6 - unable to maintain convoy speed.
Athelregent also had problems with maintaining speed, due to engine defects, but appears to have remained with the convoy.
Fort McMurray and Empire Plover detached for Loch Ewe on Nov. 16.
N. T. Nielsen Alonso and Winkler detached for Glasgow on Nov. 17.
Charles F. Meyer, Evita, Tucurinca, Levernbank, Kaipaki, Tongariro, Villanger and Grey County detached for ?(Belfast?) on Nov. 17.

Argos Hill smoked very badly, as did Villanger and Brimanger (all had flames coming from their funnels on occasion).

Escort Vessels:
Timmins (left at 10:45 Nov. 4), Kamsack (left at 08:30 Nov. 6) - Buxton, Wanderer, Three Rivers (these 3 left at noon Nov. 6)
Mansfield, Matapedia, Moncton, Granby (all joined at noon Nov. 6), Caldwell
Clover, Anemone, Borage, Abelia, Pennywort (all joined at 08:00, Nov. 8), Highlander, Beverly (both joined at noon Nov. 8) - left at various times Nov. 8 and Nov. 17.
(There may have been more, but I can't decipher their names. One - Narvik? joined on Nov. 17).
