CONVOY HX 196

Convoy HX 196 Cruising Order
Departed Halifax on June 29-1942 and arrived Liverpool on July 10 (Arnold Hague's "The Allied Convoy System" gives 42 ships).
List received from Ted Agar. (His source: A diary. Although the information is usually incomplete, as it appears to be in this case, I consider this diary valuable and important in and of itself and, therefore, I've chosen to transcribe it and keep it "as is" on this website, adding further details and/or corrections from other sources separately, rather than within the form itself [except for cargoes], as seen below).

Cargoes have been extracted from a document received from D. Kindell, based on the late Arnold Hague's database - see his listing for HX 196 at Ships in all HX convoys.

As can be seen (from the gargoes) this convoy had a lot of tankers.

(The stations given below are at time of departure, and may have changed as the voyage progressed).

See also Convoy ON 99.

Some of the above ships have been given the same station number in the diary, hence my question marks, but see A. Hague's information below.

British Power had previously returned to port from Convoy HX 194.

The cancelled Daltonhall shows up again in Convoy HX 200 the following month.

When comparing this information with A. Hague's listing for HX 196 at Ships in all HX convoys, we see that he has some ships that are not mentioned in the diary, as follows:
In station 92 - The British British Ardour, cargo of petrol
In station 95 - The British Comanchee, cargo of lub.oil
In station 15 - The Swedish Delhi, cargo of steel and cotton
In station 25 - The Norwegian Emma Bakke, general cargo
In station 84 - The American Pan Maine, dieso (instead of Francis Scott Key; he says the latter was bound for St. John's, so Pan Maine may have taken her station after she left).
In station 101 - The British Jamaica Planter, general cargo, 22 passengers
In station 104 - The American J. L. Luckenbach, general cargo and steel

He has British Harmony in station 61, while Tilapa has been given station 21 and Empire Emerald station 73. As already mentioned, instead of Topdalsfjord in station 104, he has the American J. L. Luckenbach, while Topdalsfjord is listed in station 103. He has Tudor Prince in station 102, Pacific Grove in station 51, Robert F. Hand in station 82.

He says the Norwegian Askot, the British Fort Townshend and the American Belle Isle detached to St. John's, N.F., and that the American Zebulon B. Vance was detached to Botwood, N.F. (no dates are given).

The ships went out in the following order (according to the diary):
The first to leave at 10:58 was Pacific Grove, followed at 11:05 by Baronesa, then with a few minutes between each ship, Empire Bronze, British Harmony, Clan Macindoe, British Power, Drupa, Ørnefjell (listed as Norwegian Oranfjell, but should be Ørnefjell), British Resolution, Arletta, G. S. Walden, Gyda, Tudor Prince, Topdalsfjord, Otina, Høegh Hood, Francis Scott Key, Teesbank, Tyndareus, Seminole, Zebulon B. Vance, Euryades, British Statesman, Empire Spray (Catapult freighter, letters being removed from the Hurricane aircraft), Empire Emerald, Robert F. Hand, Cistula, Delphinula, Regent Panther, Helgøy, Fort Fraser, Brimanger, Ocean Might, Askot, Salamis, Empire Sapphire, Tilapa, Axel Johnson, Gothland, Forth Townshend, and the last to go out at 13:42 was Belle Isle.

The Rescue Vessel Gothland, (requisitioned in Nov.-1941) was on her 3rd voyage as such, having started this voyage at Clyde with the eastbound Convoy ON 100 on June 2 (to Halifax June 17), then returning with HX 196 from Halifax on June 29, to Clyde July 10-1942.

A. Hague names the following escorts (extracted from this list of HX convoy escorts, also received from D. Kindell; dates are European style, day/month/year):
Agassiz - From 02/07/42 to 10/07/42
