CONVOY HX 195
Departed Halifax on June 21-1942 and arrived Liverpool on July 2 (Arnold Hague's "The Allied Convoy System" gives 30 ships). |
||||||||
List received from Ted Agar. (His source: A diary. Although the information is usually incomplete, as it appears to be in this case, I consider this diary valuable and important in and of itself and, therefore, I've chosen to transcribe it and keep it "as is" on this website, adding further details and/or corrections from other sources separately, rather than within the form itself [except for cargoes], as seen below).
Cargoes have been extracted from a document received from D. Kindell, based on the late Arnold Hague's database - see his listing for HX 195 at Ships in all HX convoys. (The stations shown here are at time of departure, and may have changed as the voyage progressed). Br=British, Norw=Norwegian, Eg=Egyptian, Am=American, Pol=Polish, Da=Danish, Ca=Canadian, Pa=Panamanian. |

In addition to the above, the British Ocean Pride also went out with this convoy, but no pendant number is given in the diary. According to A. Hague, she had station 12, general cargo. There's a note in connection with the slow Convoy SC 89 stating that Empire Rhodes, sailing in that convoy, originally came from HX 195. Tungsha had returned to port from Convoy HX 194, following a collision. *When comparing this information with A. Hague's listing for HX 195 at Ships in all HX convoys, we see that he does not mention British Power in HX 195. Instead, he has the Dutch Westland in station 42, general cargo, 6 passengers (not listed in the diary). Nor does he mention the Norwegian Lutz - see Notes below for an explanation of why she appears in HX 195. British Power had returned to port from the previous convoy - she's listed in Convoy HX 196. **On the other hand, he has included the British Prometheus, cargo of wheat and wool, station 43. Additionally, he has the British Tornus, cargo of aviation gas and alcohol, station 84. These ships are not named in the diary. |
Notes: Please note that Lutz is listed in Convoy HJ 6 (external link), leaving Halifax for St. John's on the same day as HX 195 departed. It's possible that the author of the diary who saw Lutz leaving port with the other ships in HX 195 simply assumed she was also destined for this convoy. The Egyptian El Nil was taken over by The Ministry of War Transport in June-1942, in use as diplomatic mission ship till 1943, then hospital ship from June-1943, later as troopship. ("The World's Merchant Fleets 1939", R. W. Jordan). The ships went out in the following order (according to the diary): A. Hague names the following escorts (extracted from this list of HX convoy escorts, also received from D. Kindell; dates are European style, day/month/year): Related external link: To the next HX convoy in my list HX 196 |
