CONVOY HX 176

Convoy HX 176 Cruising Order
Departed Halifax on Febr. 19-1942 and arrived Liverpool on March 6 (Arnold Hague's "The Allied Convoy System" gives 24 ships).
List received from Ted Agar (His source: A diary. Although the information is usually incomplete, as in this case, I consider the diary valuable and important in and of itself and, therefore, I've chosen to transcribe it and keep it "as is" on this website, adding further details and/or corrections from other sources separately, rather than within the form itself [except for cargoes], as seen below).

Cargoes have been extracted from a document received from D. Kindell, based on the late Arnold Hague's database - see his listing for HX 176 at Ships in all HX convoys.

Br=British, Norw=Norwegian, Pa=Panamanian, Bel=Belgian, Sw=Swedish.

Also, according to notes for Convoy SC 71, the Norwegian Kaia Knudsen and the British Empire Moonbeam, sailing in that convoy, originally came from HX 176.

According to Arnold Hague (via Ships in all HX convoys), the above un-named ships were as follows:
In station 41 - The British Donovania, cargo of petrol
In station 51 - The British Tucurinca, refrig, general, 10 passengers
In station 71 - The British Empire Bronze, cargo of petrol
In station 81 - The British Port Alma, refrig., general, 10 passengers
In station 22 - The British Tudor Prince, general cargol
In station 32 - The Norwegian Trondheim, cargo of petrol
In station 42 - The Norwegian Haakon Hauan, cargo of paraffin
In station 52 - The British Megara, cargo of dieso (from SC 69 and SC 70) - returned, sailed in HX 177
In station 62 - The Norwegian Olaf Bergh (from HX 175), general cargo
In station 72 - The Norwegian Marit II, cargo of crude oil
In station 82 - The Norwegian Norefjord (from HX 175), general cargo
In station 23 - The Swedish Gdynia, general cargo
In station 33 - The British Silverbeech, general cargo, 175 mails
In station 63 - The British British Character, cargo of petrol
In station 73 - The British Empire Pearl, cargo of petrol
He has no ship in station 13, but he has the Panamanian El Estero in station 12, general cargo - straggled. For info, she later joined Convoy PQ 13 to Murmansk in March-1942, returning with Convoy QP 11

*Also, A. Hague has some ships in stations where none are listed in the diary, as follows:
In station 92 - The British Asphalion (refrig., general, 68 mails)
In station 53 - The British British Diligence (cargo of petrol)

Notes:
The British Fort Amherst is also listed as going out that day - no convoy station is given. This ship is also included in Convoy HX 179, departing Halifax on March 9 (bound for St. John's only), which could mean she was either cancelled from HX 176, or returned to port (or the listing is an error).

Belgian Gulf in station 83 was originally Belgian - under Panamanian flag from 1942.

The Belgian Prinses Maria-Pia was on charter to the Ministry of War Transport from Oct.-1940 till Apr.-1946 at which time she was returned.

Empire Pearl later became the Norwegian Norheim (March-1942), and is listed as such in subsequent convoys on this website.

The ships (in the diary) left port in the following sequence:
The first ship to leave at 11:10 was a British freighter, followed 2 minutes later by the Commodore Vessel which was the British freighter in station 51 (in other words, Tucurinca according to A. Hague), then with a few minutes between each ship the British James J. Maguire, a tanker (41 - no nationality given, but according to A. Hague this was the British Donovania), the British Waroonga, Ruahine and Marquesa, a Norwegian freighter (82 - Norefjord), the Belgian Prinses Maria-Pia, a Norwegian tanker (42 - Haakon Hauan), a British freighter (33 - Silverbeech), British tanker (73 - Empire Pearl), British freighter (22 - Tudor Prince), unnamed Panamanian freighter (13 - El Estero), unnamed Swedish freighter (23 - Gdynia), a Norwegian tanker (72 - Marit II) a Norwegian freighter (62 - Olaf Bergh) and another unnamed Norwegian tanker (32 - Trondheim), the Panamanian Belgian Gulf followed by 2 unnamed British tankers (52 and 71 - Megara and Empire Bronze), the British passenger vessel Neleus, an unnamed freighter (station 81 - no nationality given, but as mentioned, this was the British Port Alma), the British liner Fort Amherst (either returned or cancelled - listed in HX 179) and the last ship to leave at 12:48 was a British tanker for station 63, which according to A. hague was British Character.

A. Hague names the following escorts (extracted from this list of HX convoy escorts, also received from D. Kindell; dates are European style, day/month/year):
Alberni - From 22/02/42 to 05/03/42
