CONVOY HX 164
Departed Halifax on Dec. 8-1941, arrived Liverpool on the 23rd (Arnold Hague gives 43 ships). This does not mean that all the ships arrived that port on that date; some ships had other destinations. |

Received from Ted Agar (His source: A diary).
Cargoes have been extracted from a document received from D. Kindell, based on the late Arnold Hague's database - see his listing for HX 164 at Ships in all HX convoys. See also ON 34 and subsequent ON convoys. Br=British, Du=Dutch, Norw=Norwegian, Bel=Belgian, Pa=Panamanian, Am=American. |

According to the diary, the CAM ships Empire Clive and Empire Day also sailed in this convoy - stations not given. Note, however, that Empire Clive is listed in Convoy SC 59 from Sydney, C.B. on Dec. 10, having originally been scheduled for the previous SC convoy.
*When comparing the above with Arnold Hague's listing for Convoy HX 164 at Ships in all HX convoys, we find that he has the Panamanian Audacious in station 54, while the Dutch Barendrecht has been given station 52, and W. H. Libby station 53, listed as Panamanian (diary says she was British). "The World's Merchant Fleets 1939" says she was American, but under Panamanian flag from 1940. This ship had been cancelled from Convoy SC 57 and SC 58. |
Notes: Commodore was in the British Norwegian in station 51. ** The name was spelt Norsetank in the diary, but this should be Norsktank. * The nationality for Indus is given as Swedish in the diary (she returned to port and sailed in the next convoy). The Panamanian Audacious had been cancelled from the previous convoy, while Hopemount had returned to port from that convoy. British Destiny, scheduled for station 27, did not sail, listed in HX 165. Also, according to a note in connection with Convoy SC 60, British Statesman, sailing in that convoy, originally came from HX 164 (see also Notes for HX 163). A. Hague names the following escorts (extracted from this list of HX convoy escorts, also received from D. Kindell; dates are European style, day/month/year): Related external link: To the next HX convoy in my list HX 165 |
