Danae II, under Ministry of War Transport from 1940, was the ex French Danaé.

Additionally, quite a few ships were scheduled for this convoy but did not sail - see the Advance Sailing Telegram on Page 1, as well as my pages for HX 131 and HX 132.

Notes:
Commodore N. E. B. Magee was in Kaipara, Vice Commodore was W. A. Owen, captain of City of Johannesburg.

According to the Commodore's report, there were 23 ships sailing from Halifax, joined by 9 from Sydney and 18 from Bermuda. Daphnella (Br) joined outside Halifax Harbour at 16:00 on June 1, after the convoy had left Halifax (at 10:30 that day), and Narragansett (Br) "additional to Bermuda portion", making it a total of 52. 46 ships were still present at local rendezvous point.

Merchant vessels that left convoy:
(Note that with the exception of the Norwegian Norbryn, these are not included in the above table)
Daphnella returned to Halifax at 15:00 on June 2 with fuel valve trouble, 43 07N 59 34W (listed in HX 132).
Empire Elk (Br) dropped out of convoy due to fog and storm at 10:00 on June 4, 42 23N 52 59W.
Tureby (Br - destination Belfast/Avonmouth) dropped out with N.U.C. balls hoisted at 09:00 on June 6, 44 45N 46 24W.
New York City (Br) dropped out with boiler trouble at 09:00 on June 8, in 50 00N 46 15W (sailed in HX 138).
Chepo (Pa) dropped out at 09:00 on June 16 to secure cargo - 59 30N 16 33W.
San Ernesto (Br) proceeded to Halifax for repairs. Did not join convoy (listed in HX 132).
D. L. Harper (Br) returned to Bermuda. Did not join convoy (sailed in HX 131).
* Norbryn was sent to join slow convoy (SC 33) at 15:30 on June 15, unable to maintain pre-arranged speed, reason given as "bad coal".

Tony says Convoy SC 30 joined HX 130 for a while, but I can't get this to fit, as this convoy had departed Halifax on Apr. 29-1941, a whole month before HX 130 left. He probably means SC 33 which departed Sydney C.B. on June 1 (the earlier convoys SC 31 and SC 32 both originated in Halifax, on May 9 and May 19 respectively. The latter had joined up with HX 128 for a few days).

The Commodore says:
"Fog and bad weather were encountered one day out from Halifax. This prevented junction of Sydney and Bermuda portions at arranged times. Dense fog continued with brief, clear, intervals, for some 10 days. Moderate gale sprang up on 16th June, necessitating some ships to heave to to secure deck cargo. As regards enemy activity, voyage was uneventful."

Ocean escorts:
HMS Ramillies joined convoy outside Halifax at 15:30 on June 1 and left at 18:30 on the 9th in position 53 30N 46 48W.
A/S Escort joined convoy at 16:50 on June 7 in position 48 19N 45 49W - left at 06:20 on June 15 in 60 00N 25 60W.
HMS Derbyshire joined at 08:00 on June 11 in 53(55?) 00N 47 00W - left at 06:20 on June 15 in 60 00N 25 50W (23 30? The document is a little blurry, making the 3's and the 5's look almost the same). This was a former merchant vessel requisitioned as AMC HMS Derbyshire on Oct. 14-1939. Later used as troopship from Febr.-1942 under MOWT, and as landing ship1943-45 - troopship again in 1945, returned Nov.-1946 (R. W. Jordan).

Local escorts (Halifax):
HMCS Pictou, HMCS Rimouski.
Local escorts (at Rendezvous - 05:00 on June 15, in 60 36N 25 58W):
HMS Sardonyx, HMS Watchman, HMS Niger, HMS Speedwell, HMS Banff, HMS Ariguani, HMS Petunia, HMS Violet, HMS Heliotrope, HMS Verbena, HMS Fishguard, HMS Culver, HMS Hartland.
Air Escort:
Sighted in 43 10N 60 00W at 11:29 on June 2.
Sighted Sunderland Flying Boat in 59 47N 33 00W at ? (the rest of text is missing).
Sighted friendly aircraft in 58 41N 06 45W at ? (missing).

All the Norwegian vessels in the table above are included on this website under their respective letters of the alphabet.
