To Hiram on the "Ships starting with H" page.

Manager: Bruusgaard, Kiøsterud & Co., Drammen
Tonnage:
1931 gt

Built by Fredriksstad Mek. Verksted A/S, Fredrikstad, Norway in 1926.

 Some War Voyages:
(More will be added).

Hiram made several independent voyages in 1941 and 1942 to places like Singapore, Sourabaya, Bombay, Colombo, Karachi, Aden, Havana, Lourenço Marques, Capetown, Pernambuco, Trinidad etc., until she in Nov.-1942 started sailing in convoys, as will be seen by following the instructions provided at the external link at the end of this page.

She's listed in Convoy SC 126 from Halifax to the U.K. in Apr.-1943, returning across the ocean the following month with the westbound Convoy ON 182*, which left Liverpool on May 6-1943 and arrived New York, Hiram's destination on that occasion, on the 22nd. The Norwegian Dageid, Fernwood, Gallia, Germa, Ivaran, Oregon Express, Skiensfjord, Thorshov, Thorshøvdi and Villanger are also listed. In June that year she sailed in Convoy SC 134, general cargo for Sharpness, and is subsequently said to have returned with the westbound Convoy ON 193*, departing Liverpool on July 16, arriving New York on the 31st., again with a large number of Norwegian ships, namely Bralanta, Chr. Th. Boe, Fagerfjell, Fernwood, Geisha, Harpefjell, Herbrand, Idefjord, Maud, Meline, Norlom,, O. B. Sørensen, Para, Samuel Bakke, Sandviken, Santos, Skaraas, Skjelbred, Stiklestad, Thorhild, Thorshov, and Tungsha, as well as the Panamanian Norlys, which had Norwegian managers and is, therefore, included under the N's on this website. Note, however, that Hiram is also included in the westbound Convoy ONS 13*, which left Liverpool on July 14-1943 and arrived Halifax on the 29th; her destination is given as New York. She could not have been in both these convoys, unless she joined one, only to return to port, then joined the other instead. Other Norwegian ships listed in ONS 13 are Astrid, Geisha, Harpefjell, Maud, Norlom, Para, Rena, and Sandviken, and as can be seen when comparing these to the Norwegian ships in ON 193, several of them are listed in both convoys.

Hiram headed back to the U.K. again with Convoy SC 140, leaving Halifax on Aug. 21-1943. Towards the end of Sept. that same year she shows up in Convoy RU 90 from Reykjavik to the U.K.; her destination is given as Boston, via Oban. In fact, she's listed, with a general cargo for Boston, in the westbound Convoy ONS 19*, departing Liverpool on Sept. 26-1943, arriving Halifax on Oct. 14. The Norwegian Acasta, Astrid, Bernhard, Norse Lady, Novasli, Rena, and Titanian were also in company.

Again, please note that by following the instructions provided at the external link below, several more convoys will come up. The site shows her voyages up to and including the spring of 1945, and it does not look like she made any further Trans Atlantic crossings.

* All the ON and ONS convoys mentioned here will be added to individual pages in my Convoys section in due course, with more information on each; in the meantime, see the section naming ships in all ON convoys, and the page naming ships in all ONS convoys.

For more information on all the other Norwegian ships mentioned on this page, please see the alphabet index below, or go to the Master Ship Index.

Other ships by this name: Norway had lost a steamer by this name to WW I, sunk by UC-21 near Cape Villano on May 28-1917 when on a voyage Pomaron-Rouen with copper ore. Built 1890, 598 gt, delivered to A/S Hiram (Holdt & Isachsen), Stavanger, sold in 1912 to D/S A/S Hiram (N. Mjelde), Haugesund. There was also a Hiram II, this ship later became D/S Selvik - follow the link for details on this ship.

The text on this page was compiled with the help of: "Nortraships flåte", J. R. Hegland, E-mails from Roger W. Jordan - and misc., including the external website that I've linked to above, based on Arnold Hague's research
