Additionally, Benjamin H. Latrope is mentioned with 137 passengers, and Benjamin Schlesinger with 124. Both were bound for Clyde f. o. - station numbers not known. |
Commodore was in Fort Yukon, Vice Commodore in Fort Brule. Noreg was escort oiler. Many of the ships had passengers on board (officers and ratings) - the number of passengers in each ship is given in parenthesis in the table above. The passengers in the merchant ships were mostly Russians. The American William S Thayer is listed as sunk on Apr. 30 by U-711, but this appears to have been re-evaluated and found to have been U-307. 43 crew and passengers were lost, the majority of the 192 survivors being rescued by the escorting destroyer Whitehall, others by Robert Eden. 3 U-boats were subsequently sunk by HMS Fencer's Swordfish (U-277, U-674 and U-959); the convoy dispersed and arrived Loch Ewe and Clyde on May 6 and 7 respectively. Escorts (passengers were mostly USN personnel): Related external links: The loss of U-277 | The loss of U-674 | The loss of U-959 To the next RA convoy in my list RA 59A |
