CONVOY ON 164

Convoy ON 164 Cruising Order
Departed Liverpool at 16:00 on Febr. 1-1943 and arrived New York on the 19th (Arnold Hague says 35 ships).
Transcribed from info received from Tony C., and Roger Griffiths, England - their source: Public Records Office.

For info, some of the ships in this convoy had previously arrived England with Convoy HX 222 (see also HX 221 and HX 220).
A few later returned with
HX 228, HX 229 or HX 229A.

Askepot (Norw) took station 53 (having previously arrived Halifax from St. John's, N.F. with Convoy ON 163 (see ships in all ON convoys).
Pennsylvania Sun (Am), station 82
W.W. Bruce (Am), station 83.

A. Hague has also included Brush among the ships joining from Halifax (she had also arrived Halifax from St. John's with Convoy ON 163).



Notes:
Commodore, Captain S. N. White, R.N.R. was in Consuelo, Vice Commodore was Captain R. L. Hubbard, R.N.R. in Pacific Shipper, Rear Commodore in Manchester Trader.

According to the Commodore's notes the convoy had a total of 36 ships.
Average speed: 9 1/2 knots. (Daily positions of convoy are available on request via the contact address provided at the bottom of this page).

Empire Tamar returned to the U.K. with boiler trouble during the night of Febr. 2/3.
Volga (USSR) was missing during the night of Febr. 2/3.
Dunster Grange detached for B.A. at 09:00 on Febr. 15 in 43 51N 55 16W. (Note that none of these 3 ships are included in the table above).
Belgian Gulf, Southern Princess and El Mundo went missing during fog and gale on the night of Febr. 14/15.

The 10 ships bound for Halifax detached at 17:30 on Febr. 16 in 42 37N 60 15W.
Darien detached for Boston in the morning of Febr. 17.
Nassa detached for Galveston p.m. Febr. 17.

The Commodore says:
"Arcos seemed quite impervious to any form of signal made to him and usually made no response to general signals, but just followed the others!! Do not know if he had any form of daylight signalling lamp? He was, however, with us to the end and kept pretty well up".

Escorts:
Ocean - from noon Febr. 13 in 47 30N 48 34W: HMS Tay, Woodpecker, Loosestrife, Snowflake, Alisma, Pink.
The above were relieved by HMCS Arrowhead, Niagara, Chedabucto, New Westminster and Chicoutimi - left at 17:30 on Febr. 16 in 42 37N 60 15W (presumably with Halifax portion). HMCS Dundas (S.O.), Gananoque and Brantford joined.
