CONVOY KMS 5

Convoy KMS 5 Cruising Order
Departed Clyde on Dec. 11-1942, arrived Gibraltar on the 24th, Bone on the 27th (Arnold Hague says 39 ships).
A 1 forms were received from Robert Martin, England - His source: Public Records Office, Kew. His information has been compared to and supplemented with details received from Don Kindell; his source: Arnold Hague's research. (Don's work, which covers "Royal & other Navies Day-by-Day in World War 2" can be viewed at this website).

Note that there was also a faster convoy, KMF 5, which left Clyde on Dec. 12 and arrived Gibraltar on the 20th.

See also the eastbound North Atlantic convoys from the same time period (for instance HX 216 and others), as well as MKS 5 and MKS 6.

Br=British, Am=American, Norw=Norwegian, Bel=Belgian, Du=Dutch

Underlined ships returned to port, according to A. Hague.

** Ittersum shows up again in the next convoy, KMS 6.

Clan Macbrayne was also scheduled, but did not sail following a collision on Dec. 9. She's listed in the next convoy, KMS 6.

This formation (also received from Robert Martin) appears to show the ships as per Dec. 22-1942, after some of the above ships had returned (there is no Column 1 or Column 5).

Robert Martin also sent this form, but no date is visible on the document - I believe this shows the formation from Gibraltar to Bone (again there's no Column 1 or 5).

Nationalities of ships already mentioned in the above forms have not been noted.

* Hampton Lodge returned to Gibraltar with engine defects. Later joined KMS 6.

Notes:
Francis Parkman and Topdalsfjord were very slow and slack at repeating signals.

Stad Maassluis, Harbury and Empire Lancer had excessive and dangerous smoke from funnel.

Empire Metal was bombed and sunk at Bone on Jan. 2-1943. She had 4000 tons of aviation fuel on board, crew of 47 and 9 gunners - 6 died. She was still on fire on Jan. 6, broken in 2 abaft the amidship house. Wreck raised in 2 parts in 1949, last part raised in May 1950.

St. Merriel (from the previous convoy) was also struck that day, crew of 37, 11 gunners and 10 passengers - 5 crew and 1 gunner lost. Still on fire in No. 3 hold Jan. 6, resting on bottom with big hole in her starboard side. Struck by bomb on foredeck during air raid on Febr. 9, refloated and towed to outer port Dec. 12-1948 and beached Grenovillere. After part, in tow from Bone to Vado, sank Aug. 4/5-1950 ("Lloyd's War Losses", Vol. I).

Escorts (received from Don Kindell):
Dec. 11-Dec. 20:
Baluchistan, Carnatic.
Dec. 11-Dec. 24: Algoma, Bideford, Calgary, Camrose, Hastings, Kitchener, Landguard, Londonderry, Lulworth, Moosejaw, Petunia, Prescott, Regina, Woodstock.
Dec. 23: Convolvulus, Fleetwood, Penstemon, Samphire, Velox, Venomous, Vetch, Wivern.
Dec. 26-Dec. 27: Pozarica.
