CONVOY HN 16 Norway-U.K.
Left Norway on March 2-1940 and arrived Methil on March 5
Transcribed from Advance Sailing Telegram received from Tony Cooper, England - His source: Public Records Office, Kew. Convoy stations are not known. A document listing all the Norway-U.K. Convoys states that Convoy HN 16 had 6 British, 18 Norwegian, 2 Danish and 2 Finnish ships, for a total of 28, 7 of which were bound for the west coast. As can be seen below, this table gives more than 28 ships, but some are also listed in the next convoy, so may not have sailed? |

Comparing this list with a list of ships received from Don Kindell, based on the late Arnold Hague's database, I find that A. Hague has also included the Dutch Batavia in this convoy. She's not mentioned in the Advance Sailing Telegram for HN 16. She is, however, listed in the AST for the previous convoy, HN 15. Note that there's a Batavia listed as Norwegian in Convoy ON 20 later in March.
Additionally, A. Hague calls Valborg Norwegian, 844 gt (listed as Danish in the AST). He otherwise agrees with the AST. |
Notes: * Kurikka is listed as French (3106 gt) in the original document, but I believe she was Finnish. * Vesta, Hafnia, Baron Kelvin, and Ovington Court may not have sailed? They are all also listed in the Advance Sailing Telegram for the next convoy, HN 17. Report on passage is not available. Escorts mentioned on this page: See also the text under March 2 on this external page (scroll down in the text), which mentions this convoy and its escorts. To the next HN convoy in my list HN 17 |
