Owner: D/S A/S Notos
Manager: Valdemar Skogland A/S, Haugesund
Tonnage:
2713 (2792?) gt

Delivered in June-1898 from Irvines Shipbuilding & Dry Dock, West Hartlepool (103) as Laura to Pyman Steamship Co. Ltd., West Hartlepool. Nordenfjeldske D/S fleet list gives tonnage as 2792 gt, 1765 net, 4870 tdwt, 324' (lpp) x 46' x 23' 1/2", Triple exp. steam engine by T. Richardson & Sons Ltd., West Hartlepool, 1460 ihp. Sold in Jan.-1913 to A/S D/S Svendborg (A. P. Møller), Copenhagen and renamed Laura Mærsk. Sold to Det Nordenfjeldske Dampskibsselskap in Aug.-1917 and renamed Knut Jarl; taken over in Baltimore on Aug. 15 and entered into Den Norske Syd-Amerika Linje between North and South America. In service Norway-Brazil-Argentina in 1918, then between Finland and South America in 1919. From 1920 until 1922 she was on time charter to the Algerian State Railways. In March-1922 she was placed in North America-Norway-Baltic service, then in 1923 to North Russia. On Aug. 1-1924 she was on a 2 years time charter for service to East Asia, extended for another year in 1926. Returned in Hamburg on Nov. 27-1927. Sold in May-1933 to D/S A/S Notos (Valdemar Skogland), Haugesund after having been laid up for a while at the Rosenberg yard in Stavanger. Docked and renamed Notos.

Some of her voyages are listed on these original images from the Norwegian National Archives:
Page 1 | Page 2

It looks like several pages of her voyage record are missing; these will be added if/when found. Also, as will be seen when going to Page 2, the record skips from March-1942 to Dec.-1942, then to Jan.-1944 (A. Hague has her in several convoys in 1943, 1944 and 1945).

From March-1940 to May-1945:

Follow the convoy links provided for more information on each.

Errors may exist, and some voyages are probably missing.

*This note is a little confusing, since the above voyage took place in June-1942, and the next in July that same year. These 2 voyages are not included on Page 2. The page does agree with her arrival Boston on March 4-1942, then skips to Dec. 14-1942, when she arrived New York, but no 1943 voyages are listed; the next entry on the document is for Jan. 10-1944, when she's said to have arrived Havana. Therefore, the accuracy of the rest of A. Hague's Voyage Record cannot be confirmed. As will be seen, it looks like some voyages may be missing from his record as well.

 Some Convoy Voyages:
For information on voyages made in between those mentioned here, as well as later voyages, please see the documents received from the National Archives of Norway and A. Hague's Voyage Record above.

Notos was attacked by a German U-boat near St. Kilda on Jan. 20-1940 but was not hit (this attack is not mentioned by Jürgen Rohwer). Norway was still neutral at that time.

She's listed as sailing in Convoy HN 17 from Norway to the U.K. on March 7-1940, bound for London with general cargo - follow the link for more info, several Norwegian ships took part. As can be seen when going to Page 1 of the archive documents, she was in Bilbao when war broke out in Norway on Apr. 9-1940, having arrived there from London the day before.

In May-1940 she can be found among the ships in Convoy OB 144, which originated in Liverpool on May 8. She was bound for Parrsboro, N.S. in ballast, station 44, having sailed from Milford Haven on May 9. However, she's said to have parted company during the night of May 11 and sent to Milford Haven with a displaced crank shaft. According to the archive document she arrived Milford Haven on May 13, later proceeding to Swansea. She shows up again, together with Ferncastle, Helgøy, Hird, Litiopa and Tautra, in Convoy OB 174, which originated in Liverpool on June 25 and was dispersed on the 30th. Her arrival Parrsboro is not given on the archive document, but she left again on July 26 and arrived Greenock Aug. 11, proceeding to Dundee later that month. In Oct.-1940 we find her, along with Corvus, Inger, Nesttun, Salonica and Touraine (sunk - follow link for details), in Convoy OB 224, which started out in Liverpool on Oct. 5 and dispersed on the 12th. Notos was bound for Iceland on that occasion and arrived Reykjavik on Oct. 14, later sailing from there to Sydney, C.B., where she arrived on Dec. 25.

Her 1941 voyages also start on Page 1, and continue on Page 2, which also has a few 1942 voyages. Again, see also A. Hague's Voyage Record above.

For more details on the other Norwegian ships mentioned here, please see the alphabet index below, or go to the Master Ship Index.

 POST WAR:

Laid up in New York in 1945, then condemned. Sold in Dec.-1946 to Loudee Iron & Metal Co. Inc., New York for breaking up. Arrived Sydney N.S. in Jan.-1948 to be broken up by Dominion Steel & Coal Corp.
