For information on voyages made in between those mentioned here, please see the documents received from the National Archives of Norway and A. Hague's Voyage Record above.
Munin had been in regular coal trade to Svalbard when she was recaptured by allied forces in the fall of 1941 and sent to Iceland. Please see "Some background history" on my page about D/S Dagny I for an explanation as to how this came to pass. Judging from the information found on Page 1, it looks like she remained in Iceland for 2 months before proceeding to Clyde on Nov. 1, with arrival Nov. 5. According to Arnold Hague, this voyage was made in Convoy HX 156, which had originated in Halifax on Oct. 22. Several Norwegian ships took part, and Eglantine and Montbretia are named among the escorts.
Her 1942 voyages also start on the document mentioned above and continue on Page 2, Page 3 and Page 4.
There's a Norwegian ship that looks like Munin listed in Convoy RU 37 from Reykjavik to the U.K. in Aug.-1942 (the original convoy document is rather blurry, and names of some ships hard to decipher). The tonnage is given as 99 gt, but when going to Page 3 above, we see that Munin did indeed depart Reykjavik on the date this convoy sailed, Aug. 24. This is also confirmed by A. Hague's Voyage Record.
Munin took part as supply ship in connection with the invasion of Normandy in June-1944, arriving June 26, according to "Nortraships flåte".
As will be seen when going to Page 11, she finally got to go home to Norway at the end of Dec.-1945. See also Page 12 (showing voyages to Apr.-1946).
According to this external page, she sailed as Mercur for Northern Steamship Co. Ltd. (O. S. Nylund), Helsingfors, Finland from 1947. Sold to Belgium for breaking up in 1952.
Haugesund lost a steamer by this name in Dec.-1907, 1192 gt - originally delivered in 1879 as Engadine for Wilson & Co., London. From Nov.-1893 as Munin for Joh. E. van der Ohe, Bergen. Purchased by B. Stolt-Nielsen, Haugesund on May 2-1899. Disappeared with 16 men on a voyage Kotka, Finland-Ghent, Belgium, during a heavy storm.
The text on this page was compiled with the help of: "Nortraships flåte", J. R. Hegland, and misc. other.
