D/S Jernland To Jernland on the "Ships starting with J" page. Manager: Thv. Halvorsen, Bergen Built in Sunderland in 1905. Previous name: Collingwood.
Jernland is listed among the ships in Convoy HN 9B from Norway to the U.K. in Jan./Febr.-1940; she arrived Sunderland on Febr. 3. As will be seen when clicking on the link, several other Norwegian ships also took part. She was subsequently in service around the U.K. for most of the war, as will be seen when following the instructions provided at the first external link at the end of this page. She usually sailed in convoys, but also made several independent voyages. On June 2-1940* she collided with the British S/S Winga; Winga sank. "Nortraships flåte" gives the location as off Rosyth and says Winga's survivors (entire crew) were picked up by Jernland, but this information appears to be incorrect. Ron Young, England has told me that according to British sources, the collision happened 5 miles east of West Hartlepool, Winga being on a voyage from Santander to Tyne with iron ore, 14 died. (Britain had lost another Winga to a collision on Jan 29-1918, northeast of Spurn Point, voyage Hull-Sunderland in ballast).
At the end of July-1940 we find Jernland in station 95 of Convoy OA 190, but she was only bound for Glasgow, station 95. This convoy left Methil on July 26 and dispersed on the 29th; several Norwegian ships took part, namely Bonde, Galatea, Hjalmar Wessel, Kul, Siak, Solferino and Tai Ping Yang, all of which were bound for ports across the Atlantic, except Solferino, which was bound for Aberdeen. Jernland is also included, with Atle Jarl and Selvik, in Convoy OA 228, which left Methil on Oct. 12-1940 and dispersed on the 16th, Jernland arriving Sharpness independently on Oct. 19 (ref. external links provided below). Jernland lost her propeller in Febr.-1941, and was towed in to Tyne. She was used as supply ship in Operation Neptune (Overlord, the Normandy invasion), unloading from the 6th until the 9th of June-1944, returning with more supplies on the 12th. The external website below has information on some of the convoys she was in during this time period. More details on all the other Norwegian ships named here can be found with the help of the alphabet index at the end of this page, or go to the Master Ship Index. Bergen had previously had another ship by this name, originally delivered in 1880 as Solon for Robinson & Roland, Whitby, 1375 gt. From 1907 under Norwegian flag as Locksley (Trondheim), then from 1913 as Jernland. Purchased by J. Ringen A/S, Haugesund as Starefos on June 9-1917, sold in 1918 to D/S A/S Seglfos, Christiania, sailed as Nordpol from 1921 for Gørrisen & Co. A/S. Sold in 1924/'25 to A/S Inger (Jacob Kjøde A/S), Bergen. Ran aground on July 27-1926 near the west coast of Iceland on a voyage Marmelstrand (Denmark)-Iceland with general cargo.
