Final Fate - 1939 (Norway still neutral):

Disappeared while on a voyage in ballast from Sarpsborg, Norway to Grangemouth. Last heard from on Dec. 7. Sunk by U-20* (Moehle) north of Scotland on Dec. 10-1939, with the loss of 18. The bodies of 2 were found in a lifeboat half full of water on Dec. 12 about 160 miles west/northwest of Rattray Head.

* Book 1 of "Handelsflåten i krig" (Atle Thowsen) gives the U-boat as U-31 (Habekost). "Våre gamle skip" lists the same U-boat (giving the date as Dec. 12). However, J. Rohwer says in a footnote with regard to this claim: "The attack by U-31 could not have accounted for the Føina, which did not leave port until 07.12.39. Moreover, the Føina was en route from Sarpsborg, Norway to Grangemouth on the Firth of Forth." He lists the Estonian Agu as the victim of U-31, sunk between Tyne and Gothenburg at 07:54 on Dec. 6, German time.

For info, U-20 was also responsible for the loss of the Norwegian Hosanger and Faro later on.
