CONVOY MKS 35

The documents from which I've transcribed the information in the first table gives sailing date as Jan. 1-1944, arrival Clyde on the 14th.

Arnold Hague states that MKS 35 left Port Said on Dec. 21-1943, arriving Gibraltar on Jan. 1-1944. In his "Convoy Rescue Ships 1940-1945" he indicates the convoy left Gibraltar on Jan. 6, together with Convoy SL 144 from Freetown, and arrived U.K. on Jan. 18. He does not, however, list a Gibraltar-U.K. Convoy MKS 35 in his "The Allied Convoy System".

Transcribed from documents (Advance Sailing Telegram) received from Tony Cooper - His source: Public Records Office, Kew.

The Advance Sailing Telegram clearly calls this Convoy MKS 35 with arrival Clyde on Jan. 14-1944. However, as already mentioned, Arnold Hague's "The Allied Convoy System" does not list a Gibraltar-U.K. convoy with this designation, though he does indicate there was such a convoy in his "Convoy Rescue Ships 1940-1945".

The AST states that what follows is Page 2 and Page 3, which would indicate there should also be a Page 1(?), unless the pages are numbered wrong.

See also this external site about the SL & SL / MKS convoys, where SL 144 / MKS 35 is included.

This first table shows the Gibraltar-U.K. convoy. As can be seen in the second table on this page, some of these ships had previously arrived with the Port Said convoy.

Also, the Rescue Vessel Gothland. She was on her 11th voyage as such, having started this voyage from Clyde on Dec. 15-1943 with Convoy OS 62 / KMS 36 (available at the external link at the end of this page), to Gibraltar Jan. 3-1944, returning to Clyde with Convoy SL 144 / MKS 35, Jan 6-Jan. 18-1944. Her next voyage was with Convoy ON 224 / HX 284. ("Convoy Rescue Ships 1940-1945", Arnold Hague). Convoys KMS 36 and ON 224 will be added to this site in due course.

Augusta, Dec. 26-1943

As mentioned, Arnold Hague says in his "The Allied Convoy System" that MKS 35 left Port Said on Dec. 21-1943 and arrived Gibraltar on Jan. 1-1944.

Transcribed from a list of ships in MKS 35 received from Don Kindell - Source: Arnold Hague's own research. (Don's work, which covers "Royal & other Navies Day-by-Day in World War 2" can be viewed at this website, a section of Gordon Smith's site Naval-History.net). Automatically assuming A. Hague's info is correct, I have not checked the spelling and nationalities of these ships.

As can be seen in the table above, some of these ships are said to have continued to the U.K. with a Gibraltar-U.K. convoy designated MKS 35. (As already stated further up on this page, A. Hague does not list a Gibraltar-U.K. convoy with this designation).
