CONVOYS HXF 1
Departed Halifax on Sept. 19-1939 and arrived Liverpool on the 29th.
Arnold Hague's "The Allied Convoy System" agrees w/8 ships in this convoy.
With regard to the HXF Convoys, Arnold Hague states the following: "With the HX convoy speed set initially at 9 knots, there was a number of ships in Canadian waters, or routed there from the Panama Canal and the Caribbean whose speed was sufficiently high to require special convoys. Their speed was insufficient to justify inclusion in the independent category so Fast convoys desginated HXF were run to accommodate them. These HXF convoys sailed a few days prior to or after the appropriate HX convoy and bore the same numeric designation; thus, HXF 1 sailed 19 Sept 1939 (HX 1 had sailed on Sept. 16). As there were insufficient fast ships to require regular convoys, the HXF series is incomplete. Only 1, 2 and 6 to 20 inclusive actually sailed". (All of them are available on this site). |
